DESCRIPTION:Cantemus Chamber Chorus\, with 40 members from across the North Shore\, will present two May concerts in Beverly and Newburyport titled “I Hear America Singing.” Featuring African-American Spirituals and music by Charles Ives\, Aaron Copland\, Rosephanye Powell\, Charlene Archibeque\, Cecil Effinger\, Bob Dylan\, and more\, texts are by American poets Walt Whitman\, Emily Dickinson\, Langston Hughes\, and others. \nThe concerts will explore what it means to be American – the American Landscape\, the American Dream\, Songs of Protest\, Songs of the American Diaspora\, Songs on American Poetry\, and finally asks: The American Dream Restored? \nJoining the Chorus will be guitarist Chris Rubén-Winters and oboist Benjamin Fox. Rubén-Winters draws from deep roots in jazz\, salsa\, and classical music and his playing has enriched performances of multiple Massachusetts choral groups. Fox’s versatility and virtuosity have been showcased in a variety of venues\, from Carnegie Hall to Honolulu nightclubs. Singers participate in weekly rehearsals\, concerts at different community events and at the Shalin Liu Performance Center. Singers in the chorus join a wonderfully supportive community that values high artistic excellence and diverse musical programming that reflects the Cape Ann region within a global context. \nThe vision for Rockport Music education programming is to provide engaging and interactive programming of all musical genres throughout the community to encourage curiosity\, participation and creativity through music and the arts. \nFree\, Reservations Encouraged

DESCRIPTION:Darlin’ Corey features the singing and playing of three accomplished musicians of the thriving music scene of Portland\, ME. Award winning fiddler and singer Erica Brown on fiddle\, guitar\, vocals\, notable songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Matt Shipman on guitar\, vocals\, mandolin\, bouzouki\, banjo and Portland’s favorite bass player Kris Day\, who has also toured with legends like Link Wray\, Dale Hawkins\, Ronnie Dawson and Joe Clay. \nTheir music is a diverse and unique blend of folk with influences from bluegrass and old time music. Drawing on these threads of North American folk music\, their elegant harmonies are the beating heart of their sound\, in both their original music and the traditional old time\, bluegrass and New England influenced music they regularly showcase. In Darlin’ Corey’s singing and playing\, you can feel the many years of dedication to these celebrated musical traditions. \nTogether they create an engaging performance of thoughtful originals\, traditional songs and tunes\, and songs that influenced them along the way. Erica Brown’s fiddle-playing is at turns virtuosic and completely unpretentious. Matt Shipman is an ideal counterpart as his versatility on a dizzying array of stringed instruments (guitar\, Irish bouzouki\, 5-string banjo\, mandolin) blend seamlessly\, never timid or overpowering. Kris Day holds it all together with his solid bass playing.
