SUMMARY:Rocky Neck Historic Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Rocky Neck Historic Walking Tour are back for the season! This public walking tour covers the rich history of Rocky Neck Art Colony\, showcasing the many artists who worked here\, especially from the late nineteenth century to today. Artists such as Edward Hopper\, Winslow Homer\, Augustus Buhler\, John Sloan\, Theresa Bernstein\, Stuart Davis\, and Emile Gruppe found artistic inspiration and community in this peninsula. \nJoin one of our docents on the tour and follow a path that held studios and gathering places of the artists\, interspersed with the fishing shacks\, sail lofts\, and schooner docks of the fishing industry that grew up here over the same period. It will include recognition of the many galleries that contribute to the Rocky Neck community today. The tour also describes the importance of transportation and the proliferation of hotels that encouraged the growth of Rocky Neck as an artist community\, as well as other notable historic events. \nRNAC’s Historic Walking Tours last from 1- to 1.5 hours and cover approximately .75 miles. Tours begin at the Rocky Neck Parking Lot and end at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center\, 6 Wonson Street\, Gloucester\, MA. \nParticipants are encouraged to park in the parking lot at the entrance to Rocky Neck where a volunteer tour guide meets the group. Comfortable shoes are encouraged. Be prepared to walk on uneven terrain and up a hill. \nThe 2025 public tours will be take place on Saturdays at 11am:\nMay 24\nJune 7 & 21\nJuly 12 & 26\nAugust 9 & 23\nSeptember 6 & 20 \nTours are limited to 15 people.\nCost: $10 for RNAC members or $25 for nonmembers. \nFor more information email director@rockyneckartcolony.org or call 978-515-7004. DESCRIPTION:Visit Long Hill’s breathtaking gardens and stately historic house for a guided tour. Enjoy the rich history of this grand country estate\, home of the Sedgwick family\, as you learn about the elegant lifestyle of wealthy Bostonians on the North Shore\, and the artisans who created it. The tour takes you through the Federal-style house and the spectacular gardens\, with terraces\, statues\, fountains\, and pagodas\, each section filled with unique perennial flowers from around the world. Highlights of the tour include a room filled with stunning 19th century Chinese wallpaper\, the evolution of the stunning Sedgwick gardens\, and the hidden connection between the house and an old Southern antebellum mansion. \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather. Sturdy\, comfortable shoes are recommended. Meeting point for the tour is in front of the Main House by the copper beech tree. \nSpace is limited. \nLong Hill House & Garden Tours run most Saturdays and Sundays April through the end of September. DESCRIPTION:Enter a world of early 20th-century country elegance and contemporary garden design with this specialty garden tour focusing on cut flowers at Stevens-Coolidge! \nCut Flowers will take you through the expansive manicured gardens and European-inspired flower beds designed in the 1920s and our newly installed Cutting Garden\, with a focus around a variety of cut flowers such as zinnias\, sunflowers\, and cosmos to name a few. Tour includes a history of the property and gardens with a dedicated focus on the care of cut flowers. After the tour\, participants will gather with one of our Trustees staff as they lead participants in a workshop to create their own cut flower inspired bouquet to take home. \nPre-registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Our friendly\, knowledgeable tour guides share fascinating stories in each of the museum’s period rooms and galleries. \nYou will walk through this Federal-period house\, from its 1808 beginning as a ship captain’s home to its ownership by multiple generations of the Cushing family. See parts of the home as it was lived in\, as well as galleries featuring maritime trade\, the churches of Old Newbury\, and art works by Newburyport native Laura Coombs Hills. \nTours are on the hour\, 11-4pm\, Thursday – Sunday. Pre-order of tickets is encouraged as space cannot be guaranteed without tickets. Please arrive 10 minutes before your tour starts. \nTours are $10\, $8 for seniors\, $5 for those under 18.
