Following the reading\, educator\, Project Scholar for the Freeman Family Project\, and Gloucester Juneteenth founder Toni Waldron will lead breakout groups for community members to discuss the speech and their experience reading it. Kyrouz Auditorium\, Gloucester City Hall \n10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Interactive program in the City Hall parking lot guided by Toni Waldron on the history of the Freeman family\, a prominent Black family living in Gloucester in the 18th and 19th centuries. A table organized and staffed by the Bookstore of Gloucester and Dogtown Books will distribute books that center diverse voices\, including those written by BIPOC authors\, to visitors thanks to the generosity of Action\, Inc. In this walking tour down Middle Street — one of Gloucester’s oldest streets – we will step back in time to meet people who were witness to Revolution right from this spot; see where they lived and gathered\, in houses still standing today; and hear the stories of the roles they played in defending liberty\, as patriots\, privateers\, preachers and more. This tour was developed in conjunction with the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you walk Middle Street in downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThis walking tour is three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. Hiking attire and footwear advised; also\, walking poles if you use them. Bring water and insect repellent. The tour will start at the main entrance to Dogtown\, off Cherry Street. Meet at the parking lot a short distance up Dogtown Road\, on the right. At this Gallery Talk\, Greg Bover will discuss the collaborative process along with the history of C. B. Fisk. \nGreg Bover retired from C.B. Fisk\, Inc. in 2020 after 42 years as Project Manager\, designer\, and Vice President for Operations. He supervised the design and construction of more than thirty Fisk instruments in churches\, concert halls\, and academic institutions across the United States and around the world\, including The Memorial Church at Harvard\, the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas\, organs at Kobe and Yokohama\, and the firm’s magnum opus at the Cathedral in Lausanne\, Switzerland. \nGreg lives in Rockport with his wife Maureen Aylward. Long active in community building\, he is a Past President of the Sawyer Free Library and the Gloucester Rotary Club. He continues to serve on the Government Affairs Council of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce\, is a Trustee of the Awesome Gloucester micro-grant foundation and is a Corporator of the Cape Ann Savings Bank. Honors include a Restoration Award from the Gloucester Historical Commission\, and citizenship awards from the Rotary Club\, Unitarian Universalist Church\, and the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce. An avid sailor and woodworker\, he is board president\, crew member\, and ship’s carpenter on the 122-foot\, 1926 schooner Adventure. Greg holds a Master’s Credential for vessels up to 200 tons. C.B. DESCRIPTION:Cape Ann Museum Courtyard\, Downtown Campus\n27 Pleasant St\, Gloucester\, MA\, 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nExplore the area surrounding the Museum on this walk past select Gloucester houses made famous by American realist painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century. His paintings from this period capture the local landscape and architecture in a loosely rendered\, light–filled style and are considered by many to be some of his finest works. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you loop around downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. B. Fisk experiencing most every aspect of organ building. Primarily a reed pipe voicer\, he has also been involved in woodworking\, pipe making\, drawing and design in AutoCAD\, CNC programming and operation\, organ maintenance\, among other tasks. Potthast was a prominent figure in American Art\, exhibiting at the National Academy of Design and the Paris Salon whose paintings are characterized by their use of light and color. \nJoin us Thursdays for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. No special knowledge needed! SUMMARY:Walking Tour: Historic Dogtown
DESCRIPTION:Babson Boulder Parking\nCherry Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nOn Cape Ann\, the name “Dogtown” conjures up many things — vast woodlands and trails; stone walls and cellar holes; tales of witches and widows; an ill-fated bullfighter; pastures\, picnics and blueberries; a sea of rocks. Dogtown is all of these things and more. But first\, it is a place where proud people once lived and worked\, at the center of Gloucester\, for nearly 150 years – until it became “Dogtown” and died out. \nThis tour will take you down the main roads of this early settlement\, to meet some of the people\, see where they lived and hear their stories. You will learn how Dogtown got its name\, why people left\, and how it has changed in the 200 years since the last house came down. You will hear about writers and artists who were inspired here\, and reservoirs that were built here. Finally\, you will see some of the inspirational word-boulders along the trails that are the lasting legacy of entrepreneur and philanthropist Roger Babson (1875-1967)\, and a symbol of the enduring nature of this special place called Dogtown. \nThis walking tour is three miles and will take approximately two hours. The route is over hiking trails that are generally easy\, but uneven\, with rocks and roots underfoot. Hiking attire and footwear advised; also\, walking poles if you use them. Bring water and insect repellent. The tour will start at the main entrance to Dogtown\, off Cherry Street. Meet at the parking lot a short distance up Dogtown Road\, on the right. There is parking for a few cars in the lot; otherwise\, park along the right side of the road\, after the parking lot\, or along Cherry St. Please arrive 10 minutes early.
