During the American Revolution\, households relied on handmade goods produced by local craftspeople and family labor. Everyday objects such as brooms\, candles\, tools\, and textiles were essential to home life and reflected the growing spirit of self-sufficiency that helped sustain communities during a time of political and economic upheaval. This workshop will introduce participants to the history of broom making and guide them through the process of creating a traditional turkey wing hand broom using natural materials and time-honored techniques. No prior experience necessary.

SUMMARY:Abolitionist Voices of Newbury and Amesbury
DESCRIPTION:Join Historic New England and the Whittier Home Association for a special two-part tour exploring the lives and legacies of abolitionists Joshua Coffin and John Greenleaf Whittier. Participants will tour the Coffin House in Newbury\, a Historic New England property and the home of teacher and abolitionist Joshua Coffin and the John Greenleaf Whittier Home in Amesbury. At the Coffin House\, visitors will tour Coffin’s study and home\, view his gravesite\, and learn about his leadership in the abolitionist movement and his influence as Whittier’s teacher. At the Whittier Home\, participants will explore Whittier’s life as a writer\, reformer\, and prominent voice for the anti-slavery cause.\nMember $20\nNonmember $25\nOne group will tour the Coffin House while the other tours the John Greenleaf Whittier Home. Groups will break for lunch\, then switch locations in the afternoon to experience the other site. The first tour is 10 a.m.–11:00 a.m. and the second is 1 p.m.–2 p.m.You will be notified of your group via email before the program.\nAdvance registration required. Registration will close on Thursday\, July 23.\nPlease call (617) 994-5955 for more information.\nAccessibility Considerations: Tour involves standing\, walking\, and stairs. Folding chairs are provided for visitors who would like to use them while on tour. The site is not equipped with ramps\, elevators\, or lifts. There is a portable restroom at the Coffin House\, and the house is not air-conditioned. There is a restroom at the Whittier Home. We are happy to work with you to make your visit an enjoyable one and we encourage visitors with questions or requests to call ahead.

Walk the winter fields\, enjoy traditional Irish folk music from Killeeshil\, sip hot cider and make s’mores\, buy a taco from Metzy’s Food Truck\, listen to interactive Indigenous stories\, learn to drum\, and take part in a traditional Nipmuc dance led by Larry Spotted Crow Mann of the Ohketeau Cultural Center.\nThis program is funded in part by a grant from the Newbury Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

We are based out of Newbury\, MA and have four teams in our organization the Essex Base Ball Club\, Lynn Live Oaks\, Lowell Base Ball Club\, and Newburyport Clamdiggers. One of our goals is to teach the history of baseball through games and demonstrations. In addition to playing a full schedule of games every summer\, we run youth clinics in which we teach children the evolution of the game through hands on activities; we also give lectures on baseball history at historical societies\, libraries\, and other civic organizations.

Vocalists from North Shore Voices will perform various selections from Anna Phillips’ personal music collection for an hour-long concert. \nNorth Shore Voices is a dynamic vocal performance group based in northeastern Massachusetts\, known for delivering high-quality\, seasonally themed concerts that span opera classics to contemporary classical vocal music. Founded in 2018 by mezzo-soprano Carla Maniscalco-Giovinco and soprano Kim Lamoureux\, the ensemble has quickly established itself as a vibrant force in the North Shore’s cultural scene. \nThis program is funded in part by a grant from the Salem Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

DESCRIPTION:It’s Base Ball\, 1864 style at Spencer Peirce Little Farm! These fun\, historically accurate games feature underhand pitching and no gloves are allowed. A ball bounced once and caught is an out! Snacks\, baseballs\, and cards are available for purchase. Come and see for yourself how this game was played in the 1860’s. The teams playing represent actual teams that played in New England during the 19th Century! \nGrass field seating: bring blankets and lawn chairs\nNo reserved seating\nWeather permitting\nThe Essex Base Ball Organization\, a non-profit “vintage” baseball group that plays baseball as it was played in the 19th century. We are based out of Newbury\, MA and have four teams in our organization the Essex Base Ball Club\, Lynn Live Oaks\, Lowell Base Ball Club\, and Newburyport Clamdiggers. One of our goals is to teach the history of baseball through games and demonstrations. In addition to playing a full schedule of games every summer\, we run youth clinics in which we teach children the evolution of the game through hands on activities; we also give lectures on baseball history at historical societies\, libraries\, and other civic organizations.

SUMMARY:A Story of Slavery and Resistance in Newbury
DESCRIPTION:In 1690\, an enslaved man called James escaped from the Dole household in pursuit of his freedom. When captured\, James revealed plans for what could have been the largest organized revolt in seventeenth-century New England led by enslaved and indentured people. A Story of Slavery and Resistance in Newbury will explore the hidden history of the Dole-Little House and the surrounding landscape. At least a dozen people were enslaved by Richard Dole on this site prior to the construction of the current Dole-Little House. This talk examines historical records about this case while exploring the Lower Green\, First Settlers monument\, the Parker (Quascacunquen) River\, and the grounds of Dole-Little House. \nDr. Tricia Peone\, project director for New England’s Hidden Histories at the Congregational Library & Archives in Boston\, and former research scholar for Historic New England’s Recovering New England’s Voices project\, presents this talk and landscape tour.
