SUMMARY:Abolitionist Voices of Newbury and Amesbury
DESCRIPTION:Join Historic New England and the Whittier Home Association for a special two-part tour exploring the lives and legacies of abolitionists Joshua Coffin and John Greenleaf Whittier. Participants will tour the Coffin House in Newbury\, a Historic New England property and the home of teacher and abolitionist Joshua Coffin and the John Greenleaf Whittier Home in Amesbury. At the Coffin House\, visitors will tour Coffin’s study and home\, view his gravesite\, and learn about his leadership in the abolitionist movement and his influence as Whittier’s teacher. At the Whittier Home\, participants will explore Whittier’s life as a writer\, reformer\, and prominent voice for the anti-slavery cause.\nMember $20\nNonmember $25\nOne group will tour the Coffin House while the other tours the John Greenleaf Whittier Home. Groups will break for lunch\, then switch locations in the afternoon to experience the other site. The first tour is 10 a.m.–11:00 a.m. and the second is 1 p.m.–2 p.m.You will be notified of your group via email before the program.\nAdvance registration required. Registration will close on Thursday\, July 23.\nPlease call (617) 994-5955 for more information.\nAccessibility Considerations: Tour involves standing\, walking\, and stairs. Folding chairs are provided for visitors who would like to use them while on tour. The site is not equipped with ramps\, elevators\, or lifts. There is a portable restroom at the Coffin House\, and the house is not air-conditioned. There is a restroom at the Whittier Home. We are happy to work with you to make your visit an enjoyable one and we encourage visitors with questions or requests to call ahead.

SUMMARY:A Story of Slavery and Resistance in Newbury
DESCRIPTION:In 1690\, an enslaved man called James escaped from the Dole household in pursuit of his freedom. When captured\, James revealed plans for what could have been the largest organized revolt in seventeenth-century New England led by enslaved and indentured people. A Story of Slavery and Resistance in Newbury will explore the hidden history of the Dole-Little House and the surrounding landscape. At least a dozen people were enslaved by Richard Dole on this site prior to the construction of the current Dole-Little House. This talk examines historical records about this case while exploring the Lower Green\, First Settlers monument\, the Parker (Quascacunquen) River\, and the grounds of Dole-Little House. \nDr. Tricia Peone\, project director for New England’s Hidden Histories at the Congregational Library & Archives in Boston\, and former research scholar for Historic New England’s Recovering New England’s Voices project\, presents this talk and landscape tour.

SUMMARY:Rocky Hill Meeting House Tour
DESCRIPTION:Rocky Hill Meeting House is one of the best preserved examples of an original eighteenth-century meeting house interior. The fact that it has served no active congregation since the mid-nineteenth century led to its remarkable state of preservation. Eighteenth-century hardware remains intact throughout the building. The marbleized pulpit and pillars supporting the upper galleries still boast their original paint. \nTour involves standing\, walking\, and some stairs. Visitors with limited mobility may be able to enjoy a first floor tour of the meeting house and there is ample seating in the pews. Visitors can access a virtual tour from their own digital device onsite. The site is not equipped with ramps\, elevators\, or lifts and there is no air-conditioning. Service animals are welcome. We are happy to work with you to make your visit an enjoyable one and we encourage visitors with questions or requests to call ahead.

DESCRIPTION:Come experience a rousing revolutionary sermon at the Rocky Hill Meeting House. In partnership with Essex Heritage\, we welcome Donald Friary in living history as the Rev. Oliver Noble to the pulpit. He will deliver a discourse first given in Newburyport on March 8\, 1775 “in commemoration of the Massacre at Boston\, March the Fifth\, 1770\,” arguing biblical justification to the Patriot cause that would soon lead to the American Revolution. DESCRIPTION:PARTNER EVENT  \nCome experience a rousing revolutionary sermon at the Rocky Hill Meeting House. In partnership with Essex Heritage\, we welcome Donald Friary in living history as the Rev. Oliver Noble to the pulpit. He will deliver a discourse first given in Newburyport on March 8\, 1775 “in commemoration of the Massacre at Boston\, March the Fifth\, 1770\,” arguing biblical justification to the Patriot cause that would soon lead to the American Revolution. Register here. \nDonald Friary\, a historian of religion and architecture in early America\, will appear in character as Mr. Noble. The service will be accompanied by the prayers\, readings\, and music heard in a New England Congregationalist meetinghouse.
