DESCRIPTION:Commemoration of the 250th anniversary of NBPT’s first reading of the Declaration of Independence\, with readings\, music\, reenactors and more \nNewburyport\, MA: The Museum of Old Newbury\, in partnership with the Custom House Maritime Museum\, Lowell’s Boat Shop\, the First Religious Society\, Theater in the Open\, the City of Newburyport\, the Greater Newburyport Chamber of Commerce and many more community partners\, will present Newburyport 250 Declaration of Independence Day: The Die Is Cast on Sunday\, July 19\, 2026\, in Market Square\, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Newburyport. \nSponsored in part by the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism (MOTT) as part of the statewide MA250 campaign. \nAt a glance \nWhat: A public commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Newburyport’s first reading of the Declaration of Independence\, with readings\, music\, reenactors\, family-friendly activities\, a waterfront salute by two schooners\, and more. \nWhen: Sunday\, July 19\, 2026; 1:45 p.m. procession\, 2:00 p.m. program \nWhere: Brown Square to Market Square\, with a stop at FRS UU Church\, followed by a waterfront observance and family friendly activities. \nIncludes: Community readings\, Revolutionary soldiers\, sailors\, and colonial-era townspeople\, ceremonial music and salutes\, the arrival of two schooners honored by privateers on board\, public access to the schooners until 5:30 p.m.\, and activities for families. \nOn July 19\, 1776\, the people of Newburyport assembled at the Meetinghouse then standing in Market Square to hear the Declaration of Independence read aloud for the first time. In the aftermath of that extraordinary moment\, patriot and future Senator Tristram Dalton wrote to Elbridge Gerry\, “The die is cast. All is at stake. The way is made plain.” \nThat plain way was not peace\, comfort\, or certainty. It was sacrifice. War had already touched Newburyport for more than a year\, but the Declaration transformed resistance into resolve. It proclaimed before the world that Americans were entitled to “Life\, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness\,” and most Newburyporters were prepared to defend those rights at any cost. \nTwo hundred and fifty years later\, Newburyport will gather again to remember that turning point in the life of the town and the nation. The day will begin at 1:45 p.m. with a procession from Brown Square to Market Square\, including a stop at FRS UU Church\, before the public commemoration begins at 2:00 p.m. in the heart of downtown. This anniversary observance invites the public to stand where earlier generations stood and to hear once more the words that changed the course of our history. \nThe program will bring together neighbors and friends\, past and present\, along with Revolutionary soldiers\, sailors\, colonial-era townsfolk\, and special guests\, for a public reading of the Declaration of Independence. With music\, salutes\, and ceremonial observances\, the event will honor those who\, in 1776\, pledged to each other their “Lives\, Fortunes\, and sacred Honor” in the defense of liberty. \nFollowing the Market Square program\, participants will proceed to the waterfront to greet the arrival of the Schooner Ardelle and the Schooner Isabella. There\, the commemoration will continue with salutes by privateers on board\, recalling the maritime world in which Newburyport lived\, fought\, and sacrificed during the Revolution. The schooners will remain in port and available to the public until 5:30 p.m. \nAs the nation marks the 250th anniversary of American independence\, Newburyport 250 Declaration of Independence Day: The Die Is Cast offers a chance not only to remember the past\, but to renew a shared civic promise. It is a day to reflect on the cost of freedom\, the courage of those who declared it\, and the enduring obligation to defend the rights and principles for which they risked everything. \nEvent is free\, donations appreciated!

DESCRIPTION:American Rebels: The Hancock\, Adams\, and Quincy Families Fanned the Flames of Revolution…in Newburyport and Beyond.\nNewburyport’s Offin Boardman carried secret letters for John Adams\, who argued court cases in Newburyport. The USS Hancock was built in Newburyport in 1776\, and all three families were linked by ties of blood and friendship to this community. Join Nina Sankovitch\, author of American Rebels: How the Hancock\, Adams\, and Quincy Families Fanned the Flames of Revolution to explore the the efforts of these leading New England families to foment support for the American Revolution in the decade leading up to the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence. \nThe fight for independence never would have succeeded if New Englanders\, across class lines and from all backgrounds\, had not joined the fight. John Hancock\, John Adams\, Abigail Adams\, and Josiah Quincy were instrumental in bringing together disparate groups and igniting a shared ambition for liberty from English oppression. Using words (in speeches and letters) and actions (court cases\, acts of civil disobedience\, espionage\, community outreach)\, they rallied colonists to betray their King and Parliament as a necessary and God-ordained duty to themselves\, their neighbors\, and their country. With the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, the shared fight became a covenant\, and the rights of life\, liberty\, and pursuit of happiness\, the promise of independence. Armed with letters of marque\, these privately owned vessels disrupted enemy supply lines\, seized valuable cargo\, and brought home provisions\, weapons\, and even captured vessels that could be refitted into more privateers to help keep the cause alive. \nPrivateering was a town-wide enterprise. Merchants financed voyages. Carpenters\, ropemakers\, and sailmakers outfitted vessels. Mariners signed on for a share of prize money. Women kept households\, farms\, and businesses running\, and stocked stores with goods brought in as prizes. When captures returned to port\, they could make fortunes. When privateers were lost\, it meant tragedy and ruin. \nAs we mark the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, join us for a fast-paced\, people-centered program that connects Newburyport to the wider Atlantic war and the astonishing records privateers left behind\, from logbooks and diaries to prize papers and court documents.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Canadian perspective on the Arnold Expedition and the last siege of Québec in 1775-1776. \nDuring the first months of the War of Independence\, the Continental Army set its sights on the Province of Quebec. This British colony\, born from the ashes of New France\, is equally a threat and an opportunity for the Thirteen Colonies. How did the Canadian population reacted to the invasion of their territory and how did this first major campaign unfolded? Focusing on the events surrounding Québec City\, Discover the efforts to capture it\, from Benedict Arnold’s fateful expedition in the wilderness\, to the siege of the city in 1775\, the Battle of Québec (Dec. 31\, 1775)\, and the departure of the Continental Army in May 1776. \nA historian and historical interpretation coordinator for the Canadian National Battlefields Commission since 2007\, Luc Nicole-Labrie has an academic background in history\, tourism\, and culture. He has contributed to numerous educational activities\, exhibitions\, lectures\, articles\, and guided tours on the events surrounding the Battles of the Plains of Abraham and Sainte-Foy\, as well as the history of the Plains of Abraham and Québec City. \nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism

SUMMARY:Newburyport's Road to Independence\, Part I: The Long\, Dark Winter of 1776
DESCRIPTION:Historian Alexander Cain returns to Newburyport to explore one of the most tense and transformative moments in American history in this engaging lecture on Massachusetts and Newburyport in early 1776. As the Siege of Boston drags through a bitter winter\, he will discuss civilian suffering inside the town\, the controversial use of smallpox in efforts to break the stalemate\, and the evolving roles of the militia and the Continental Army. He then turns to Newburyport’s own story: the growing rumblings of independence\, the dangerous position of Loyalists\, and the unleashing of the town’s most potent weapon in support of the American cause: its “wolfpack” fleet of privateers\, which struck at the heart of British supply lines and reshaped Newburyport’s economy and identity on land and at sea. \nAlex has authored numerous research articles and presentations on the American Revolution\, including the Battles of Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill\, the Siege of Boston\,Massachusetts privateers and the experiences of New England and New York loyalist refugees during the Burgoyne Campaign. In addition\, he has published two books: We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War: The Loyalists of McAlpin’s Corps of American Volunteers. He is also the creator of the blog and podcast Historical Nerdery (historicalnerdery.com). Currently\, he is in the process of writing his next book\, “For God’s Sake\, Fire!” – The Massachusetts Militia System on the Eve of the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, which is anticipated to be released in 2027.\nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism

Join noted author and historian Ghlee Woodworth\, a 12th generation Newburyport native\, and Museum of Old Newbury executive director Bethany Groff Dorau for a nighttime stroll through the historic 1842 Oak Hill Cemetery\, final resting place of shipwrecked sailors\, sea captains and merchants\, architects and photographers\, writers and poets\, silversmiths and newspaper editors\, even the inventor of the first steam-powered car! We will say hello to several Ebenezers\, though none of them Scrooges\, and toast the longest night with hot cider\, cider donuts\, and good cheer.
