This British colony\, born from the ashes of New France\, is equally a threat and an opportunity for the Thirteen Colonies. How did the Canadian population reacted to the invasion of their territory and how did this first major campaign unfolded? Focusing on the events surrounding Québec City\, Discover the efforts to capture it\, from Benedict Arnold’s fateful expedition in the wilderness\, to the siege of the city in 1775\, the Battle of Québec (Dec. 31\, 1775)\, and the departure of the Continental Army in May 1776. \nA historian and historical interpretation coordinator for the Canadian National Battlefields Commission since 2007\, Luc Nicole-Labrie has an academic background in history\, tourism\, and culture. SUMMARY:Newburyport's Road to Independence\, Part I: The Long\, Dark Winter of 1776
DESCRIPTION:Historian Alexander Cain returns to Newburyport to explore one of the most tense and transformative moments in American history in this engaging lecture on Massachusetts and Newburyport in early 1776. As the Siege of Boston drags through a bitter winter\, he will discuss civilian suffering inside the town\, the controversial use of smallpox in efforts to break the stalemate\, and the evolving roles of the militia and the Continental Army. He then turns to Newburyport’s own story: the growing rumblings of independence\, the dangerous position of Loyalists\, and the unleashing of the town’s most potent weapon in support of the American cause: its “wolfpack” fleet of privateers\, which struck at the heart of British supply lines and reshaped Newburyport’s economy and identity on land and at sea. \nAlex has authored numerous research articles and presentations on the American Revolution\, including the Battles of Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill\, the Siege of Boston\,Massachusetts privateers and the experiences of New England and New York loyalist refugees during the Burgoyne Campaign. In addition\, he has published two books: We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War: The Loyalists of McAlpin’s Corps of American Volunteers. He is also the creator of the blog and podcast Historical Nerdery (historicalnerdery.com). Together we will walk through time using the lens of Newburyport’s fashionable old houses! \nWear comfortable shoes for uneven terrain and bring a water bottle. SUMMARY:The 1775 Quebec Expedition from Newburyport: Following Their Footsteps
DESCRIPTION:On September 19\, 1775\, over 1\,100 men departed Newburyport on a secret mission to capture Quebec—led by Benedict Arnold and planned with George Washington. \nJoin Jack Santos as he recounts the stories of Newburyport’s patriots on this daring expedition through the wilderness as we celebrate its 250th anniversary. \n250 years ago this year\, on the 19th of September\, 1775\, 1100 farmers\, soldiers\, merchants\, teachers\, and laborers left Newburyport on eleven ships for a secret\, bold attack on Quebec City. \nHad the plan worked\, there likely would have been no revolutionary war\, and Quebec would have been the 14th state in a new United States of America. \nRelatively recently\, Jack Santos put his hiking boots on his feet\, and his kayak on his car\, to follow Arnold’s trail through Maine. He followed the diary\, maps\, and stories of Newburyport soldiers. Learn to distinguish prevalent styles\, note changes that have occurred over time\, and determine what questions to ask about historic houses. \nThis approximately 90-minute walk allows ample time to walk and talk with your knowledgeable guide and other participants. Together we will walk through time using the lens of Newburyport’s fashionable old houses! \nWear comfortable shoes for uneven terrain and bring a water bottle. In case of extreme weather\, this event will be an illustrated talk at the Museum of Old Newbury.

DESCRIPTION:Newburyport’s Road to Revolution Presents: Through a Howling Wilderness: Benedict Arnold’s March to Quebec\, 1775 \n📅 Friday\, September 19\, 2025 – 7:00 p.m.📍 St. Paul’s Episcopal Church\, Newburyport\, MA \nExactly 250 years to the day after Benedict Arnold led his troops out of Newburyport\, join us for a captivating lecture by historian and author Tom Desjardin on one of the most extraordinary—yet often overlooked—episodes of the American Revolution. \nIn September 1775\, Arnold commanded eleven hundred Colonial soldiers on a daring\, top-secret mission: to march and paddle nearly 200 miles through the untamed wilderness of Maine and Quebec to seize British-held Quebec City. It was a journey marked by hypothermia\, disease\, starvation\, hurricanes\, and blizzards. Dozens perished; survivors endured eating everything from dogs to lip salve before reaching their target. Though the attack ultimately failed\, Arnold’s expedition helped pave the way for America’s eventual victory. \nIn Through a Howling Wilderness\, Desjardin tells this gripping story of endurance\, sacrifice\, and leadership before Arnold’s name became synonymous with treason. \nAbout the Speaker:Tom Desjardin holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History and is the author of multiple acclaimed books. A former archivist and historian at Gettysburg National Military Park\, he has taught at Bowdoin College\, advised film and television productions (including Gettysburg and Gods and Generals)\, and appeared on the History Channel\, A&E\, Discovery\, PBS\, and CSPAN.
