SUMMARY:Newburyport’s Road to Revolution\, Part IV- Black Newburyporters
DESCRIPTION:Explore the uncomfortable truth that\, as Newburyport debated concepts of freedom and independence on the eve of Revolution\, a significant number of Americans were not free. Thousands of African Americans were enslaved\, up to 20% of the entire population of the colonies. In Newburyport\, Black voices spoke up forcefully for their liberty and equality amid the revolutionary fervor\, and helped turn the tide in Massachusetts against slavery. Some white revolutionaries bitterly characterized themselves as “slaves” of Great Britain and King George in Newburyport newspapers. “I need not point out the absurdity of your exertions for liberty\, while you have slaves in your houses\,” formerly enslaved man Caesar Sarter fired back. \nJoin a panel of noted scholars for a discussion of how Newburyport grappled with the promise and paradox of independence. \nCLICK HERE for more information and to purchase tickets \nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism

SUMMARY:Newburyport’s Road to Revolution\, Part III – The First Tea Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Sunday afternoon tea party at the Museum of Old Newbury to explore a tea mystery. For generations\, Newburyporters claimed to have been the first to protest onerous British tariffs by destroying tea imported from British India. Before Sam Adams’s band dunked that tea in Boston harbor\, as the Clipper City’s claim goes\, a sturdy shipwright sparked the Revolution when he rallied a local band to burn the offending tea in this town’s Market Square. Join historian and educator Bill Quigley\, who has examined this long-standing narrative\, to learn the truth of this history. It’s a tale of surprising twists. \nBill Quigley teaches history and directs the Writing Center at The Governor’s Academy. He’s the author of an award-winning Civil War history\, Pure Heart: The Faith of a Father and Son in the War for a More Perfect Union (Kent State\, 2016)\, and he is working now on a book about the historically misrepresented Christiana “Riot” of 1851. He is co-president of the Museum’s board of directors. \nCLICK HERE to Purchase Tickets \nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism

SUMMARY:Newburyport’s Road to Revolution Part II: Nbpt Braces for Attack by Sea
DESCRIPTION:Boston is occupied\, Portsmouth blockaded. A wild rumor flies that Ipswich has been attacked by sea and her inhabitants killed. A British scouting party sneaks into Newburyport Harbor under the cover of night. In the face of constant threat\, Newburyport’s harbor became a safe haven for vessels of all kinds on the eve of Revolution\, thanks to an elaborate web of defenses including sunken piers\, floating batteries\, and artillery at Salisbury Point. \nJoin Graham McKay\, executive director of Lowell’s Boat Shop\, and Bethany Groff Dorau as we explore how Newburyport prevented attack by sea and became a refuge for rebels at sea. \nCLICK HERE to Purchase Tickets \nFunded\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism \n \n

SUMMARY:Twilight Amongst the Tombstones: Night Walk in First Parish Burying Ground
DESCRIPTION:What better time than twilight in October to grab a flashlight and join us for a walk through this historic First Parish Burying Ground\, final resting place of some of Old Newbury’s first European settlers? \nTo add to the intimacy and atmosphere of darkness\, many epitaphs are easiest to read by flashlight. Join Museum of Old Newbury executive director Bethany Groff Dorau for a nighttime stroll through the historic First Parish Burying Ground\, established in 1646. Hear tales of murder\, witchcraft\, courage\, and romance\, and visit some of the oldest marked graves in Essex County.
