SUMMARY:Newburyport Art invites all to celebrate The Pink House Day Art Market
DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) is dedicating their first-of-the-summer Art Market Pop-up\, to The Pink House\, a beloved\, historical\, cultural icon that was demolished last year. As it endures being an artistic influence & inspiration\, the gallery at 65 Water Street will celebrate Pink House Day\, this Sunday\, June 14th\, 11am-5pm\, with those devoted to “creating memories through art”. Nine artists will sell their own original Pink House artwork in the Sculpture Garden\, including Alison Odle\, Gerry Kent\, Heather Corbett Ortiz\, Janet Bornemann\, Kallyn Lavallee\, Kathy Culbert\, Laureen Maher\, Liza Lynehan\, and Peter Neverette. \nThe Pink House Celebration Day was declared last year by Governor Maura Healey during the 100th Birthday Celebration of The Pink House\, the region gathering together as a community with dozens of locations featuring Pink House Art and themed specials. This year Newburyport Art invites all to experience the memorable beauty and shared stories of The Pink House. This event is organized by Kelly Page\, NAA staff\, and board member of the former non-profit\, Support The Pink House. \nPink House artwork can also be found in the Summer Gift Shop by artists Barry Berman and Bonita LeFlore\, while NAA Poet-in-Residence\, John Burciaga’s “Ode to The Pink House” poem will be displayed in the Sargent Gallery. \nThe Summer Art Market series in the Sculpture Garden\, will continue on Sunday\, July 12th\, August\, 9th\, and September 13th\, 11am-3pm. \nNew Hours: Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00am–5:00pm. The gallery is handicap accessible. DESCRIPTION:Plein air painting is the practice of painting outside\, or as the French term\, “en plein air”\, literally translates to\, “in the open air”. \nJoin us with your paint box for a full day of outdoor painting\, convening with nature and learning to see like an artist. I will begin with a lecture and demonstration on capturing light\, color and atmosphere on canvas using a simple Impressionistic approach. We will discuss choosing a motif\, composing a harmonized design\, seeing value shapes\, accurate drawing\, and infusing visual poetry into your motif. Students will spend the rest of the day painting while I provide artistic guidance with side-by-side easel assistance. This one day workshop is packed with valuable information that has been passed down from the masters on how to simplify the outdoor painting process.

DESCRIPTION:Altars offer sacred space for us to visit each day and make offerings of devotion to the loved ones in our lives – those who have passed and those still with us. They help us bring focus and ritual into our daily lives which can make us feel part of something larger than ourselves. Many cultures use altars throughout the year or on special days to remember those who have passed and remind them that we have not forgotten them. \nIn this workshop\, we will talk about altars from other parts of the world and religions to see how they are traditionally created. Then\, we’ll talk about what yours might include like pictures and symbols of your loved one to favorite objects that were treasured in their life. As we create these altars with love and remembrance\, you are welcome to bring a story to share (optional) about your beloved animal or human. Hopefully\, the piece you create will bring you peace as you display it and use it. Beginners as well as experienced artists are welcome to take the workshop. Johanna will guide you through using traditional box making techniques to build our alters. For ages 16 and up.

SUMMARY:Newburyport Art offers Color Theory with Jessica Murr
DESCRIPTION:Students will work with the three primary colors plus white in acrylic paint to understand and learn about color theory. The basics of how colors and paint interact on the substrate\, as well as its application to real life will be included. Still life painting will be used to apply what students have learned from the course into their own artwork. Color schemes\, how colors react to each other\, and how colors evoke emotions will be taught. Students will walk away with a better understanding of how to mix paint colors\, what is in their paint\, find colors in real life\, and how to create a cohesive color palette. This class is designed to be beginner friendly\, and welcome to all types of artists. Minimum of 4 participants needed to run the class.

SUMMARY:Newburyport Art offers Intro to Spoon Carving with Eric Goodson
DESCRIPTION:Spoons are central tools in the human experience; they may very well be the first and last tools we use in this life. They also make great projects for beginner carvers\, with their convex and concave surfaces and changing grain direction. In this course\, students will learn about wood selection\, grain orientation\, spoon design and ergonomics\, and a wide variety of special knife grips (for both slöjd and hook knives) that make carving fast\, efficient\, and safe. Attention will also be paid to stretches and massage that help relieve hand fatigue. Finally\, students will also discuss finishing oils\, paints\, and decorative techniques like chip carving and kolrosing. Loaner tools will be available\, though if students have their own carving tools\, they should bring them. Slöjd knives (Mora 106\, 120\, and 164) will also be for sale. All students will receive a spoon template that they can take home to make more! No experience necessary\, and as long as you can easily open a jar of spaghetti sauce\, you have sufficient hand strength.

Studio time will be spent designing and transferring the drawing to the block\, instruction to the care and use of carving tools\, how to register block for the inking and printing of block on paper. DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) concludes its year of exhibitions with Members’ Hometown Stories and Great Marsh Meditations\, a featured artist show by C. Max Schenk. Both exhibits run concurrently from December 5th to December 21st. \nHometown Stories asked artists to submit work inspired by their hometown\, whether a place where they grew up or currently reside. Hometown Stories features work inspired by houses\, landscapes\, businesses\, objects\, abstractions\, bodies of water\, people\, and more! The exhibition is on view in the first-floor Sargent Gallery. \nNationally recognized for his work in environmental conservation\, education and advocacy\,\nC. Max Schenk’s worldview and photography are imbued with an appreciation of nature’s cyclical resonance in all things. His Great Marsh Meditations show is the expansion of two portfolios created in 2024\, each image is exactly that – a meditation – and features scenes familiar to all who have wandered and marveled at the beauty of our coastal home – its broad gestures of landscape and the ephemeral tableaus created by wind\, tide\, and time. DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) welcomes visitors to enjoy free Invitation Night festivities at Newburyport Art. \nDecember 5th – Voices of Newburyport from 6:30-8:30pm with local voices Paul Wann\, Bonnie Jean Wilbur\, Jared Stromski and Currie Joya Huntington reading aloud fiction written by and about people from Newburyport. \nDecember 12th – Indoor Winter Arts Market from 6-8pm offers shopping for the holiday season with participating artists Lynn Andrews\, Michele Champion\, Patrick Cleary\, Amna Greaves\, Lynda Hartwell\, Milestone 35 Tools & Woodworking\, Kathleen Miller\, Lisa Pilorz\, Johanna Finnegan Topitzer\, AJ Simmons and Susan Stranc. Artists will be selling small gifts\, original paintings\, ceramics\, jewelry\, stationary\, handmade textiles\, seasonal items\, ornaments and more. \nDecember 19th – Craft Night from 6:30-8:30pm invites visitors to get creative with ornament and canvas decorating. DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) welcomes visitors to enjoy free Invitation Night festivities at Newburyport Art. \nDecember 5th – Voices of Newburyport from 6:30-8:30pm with local voices Paul Wann\, Bonnie Jean Wilbur\, Jared Stromski and Currie Joya Huntington reading aloud fiction written by and about people from Newburyport. \nDecember 12th – Indoor Winter Arts Market from 6-8pm offers shopping for the holiday season with participating artists Lynn Andrews\, Michele Champion\, Patrick Cleary\, Amna Greaves\, Lynda Hartwell\, Milestone 35 Tools & Woodworking\, Kathleen Miller\, Lisa Pilorz\, Johanna Finnegan Topitzer\, AJ Simmons and Susan Stranc. Artists will be selling small gifts\, original paintings\, ceramics\, jewelry\, stationary\, handmade textiles\, seasonal items\, ornaments and more. \nDecember 19th – Craft Night from 6:30-8:30pm invites visitors to get creative with ornament and canvas decorating. All materials will be provided. \nThe events are open to the public and will include light refreshments and live music. Exhibitions on display at the gallery will be Hometown Stories\, and Featured Artist Max Schenk. \nFounded in 1948\, Newburyport Art is dedicated to promoting and exhibiting members’ work and to providing art education and access to the visual arts for the entire community. \nThe galleries are free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00am–5:00pm\, Sunday from 1:00pm–5:00pm and is handicap accessible. SUMMARY:Newburyport Art presents Hometown Stories Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) concludes its year of exhibitions with Members’ Hometown Stories and Great Marsh Meditations\, a featured artist show by C. Max Schenk. Both exhibits run concurrently from December 5th to December 21st. \nHometown Stories asked artists to submit work inspired by their hometown\, whether a place where they grew up or currently reside. Hometown Stories features work inspired by houses\, landscapes\, businesses\, objects\, abstractions\, bodies of water\, people\, and more! The exhibition is on view in the first-floor Sargent Gallery. \nNationally recognized for his work in environmental conservation\, education and advocacy\,\nC. Max Schenk’s worldview and photography are imbued with an appreciation of nature’s cyclical resonance in all things. His Great Marsh Meditations show is the expansion of two portfolios created in 2024\, each image is exactly that – a meditation – and features scenes familiar to all who have wandered and marveled at the beauty of our coastal home – its broad gestures of landscape and the ephemeral tableaus created by wind\, tide\, and time. Great Marsh Meditations is possible through the generous support of the Dr. Kathleen Van Demark Fund for Great Marsh Artists. His show can be viewed in the first floor Hills Gallery. \nOpening reception for both shows will be Saturday\, December 6th from 4-6pm. The public is welcome to attend\, meet some of the exhibiting artists\, and enjoy light refreshments. \nAdditionally\, NAA will be hosting free invitation night events!
