SUMMARY:Pieces of Salem: An Anthology of Salem Voices
DESCRIPTION:Join Salem’s Poet Laureate J.D. Scrimgeour and PEM’s Director of Learning and Community Engagement David Snider for the official book launch of Pieces of Salem: An Anthology of Salem Voices. \nPieces of Salem: An Anthology of Salem Voices is like a stroll along a beach\, each step bringing a new\, fascinating discovery — a rock shaped like an ear\, a smoothed bit of sea glass\, the intricate patterns on a glossy shell. Edited by J.D. Scrimgeour\, the collection contains prose and poems from more than 130 citizens who live or work in Salem. Each contribution keeps to a 400-word limit\, a number chosen to commemorate the city’s quadricentennial. Taken together\, the pieces celebrate a famed city marked by ancient tragedy\, but brimming with vitality. \nA book signing and light reception will follow the program. \nThis book was commissioned and compiled as a part of Salem’s 400th anniversary. This PEM Reads event is a part of PEM’s celebration of Salem 400+.

SUMMARY:Living Histories: How Communities Shape What We Remember
DESCRIPTION:In a discussion for the North Shore AAPI Coalition’s Salem 400+ exhibition\, Afterimages: Retracing BIPOC Histories\, director Rachel TonThat speaks with Erika Lee\, Thomas Green and Sarah Kanouse on the gap between written records and living memory\, and how regions and communities preserve and pass down history in ways that often differ\, particularly in tone\, from official archives. Sharing their own experiences\, panelists will discuss how oral tradition\, community projects and grassroots organizing can help shape a fuller\, more accurate picture of the past. \nThe North Shore AAPI Coalition’s community history project was created through collaboration with other members of the BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, and other People of Color) community\, with contributions from regional organizations and historians. Their work will be on view in Salem’s Old Town Hall beginning August 24. \nExplore our other Salem 400+ events.

Please join us again in September after our summer break. \nAbout our collaborators \nTeresa Inés Coelho\nTeresa Inés Coelho has years of experience as a performing arts educator. She holds a Music Education Degree from the University of Rio de Janeiro\, and is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music. Her passion lies in igniting a love for music in children and their families through music and movement classes using the research-based (and fun!) curriculum Music Together.® \nDillian McGahey\nDillian McGahey is an illustrator and arts educator\, whose own work tackles the complexities of being human through the lens of silly little creatures. He’s been teaching at PEM since 2020\, after completing two internships in the Art & Nature Center. Outside of the museum\, he spends his time helping kids develop their own stories and artwork to turn into original books.
