Gooey’s Toxic Aquatic Adventure is written and performed by La Daniella\, an AfroDominican/Nuyorican playwright\, actor and puppeteer from Brooklyn. \nIn a near apocalyptic New York City\, Gooey Pudín is an insecure mermaid from a sewage-filled creek in search of a better life and gainful employment at G’wond’rLand Theme Park. She was also a brilliant scholar\, visual artist\, activist and public thinker far ahead of her time. \nJoin Howard Fishman\, author of To Anyone Who Ever Asks: The Life\, Music\, and Mystery of Connie Converse\, in conversation with Boston Globe contributor James Sullivan and Trevor Smith\, PEM’s Associate Director–Multisensory Experience and Curator of the Present Tense. \nTheir conversation will cover the Converse family’s long history in America\, dating back to their 1630 arrival in Salem\, and Converse’s relationship to the American songbook. They will also play samples from Converse’s pioneering recordings and haunting melodies. A book signing will follow the talk.

A project of Framingham-based Fireseed Arts Studios\, lead by artist and musician Patiño Vázquez in collaboration with local musicians and craftspeople\, Johnny Fireseed uses instruments made entirely from upcycled trash and repurposed items to perform original music with an upbeat eco message. The band’s inspiring sound aims to spread a message of joy\, fun and new ways of thinking about consumption and waste far and wide. \nVázquez will be showcasing instruments made from locally harvested trash and live looping to create ambient soundscapes. Come hear high-end electric guitars made from old kitchen countertops and drums fashioned from ventilation ducts and popcorn tins in an aesthetic that’s “part Victorian Steampunk with elements of mystic meditations in heart-opening layers of rhythms and harmonies.” Building loops and then improvising over the loops gives the listener a feel for the looks and sound characteristics of each instrument. Audience members are often invited to join in the fun! \nMusic in the Atrium is PEM’s live concert series that features local and visiting performers from a variety of musical traditions and styles. DESCRIPTION:Know before you go\nIn-person event\nLocation: Morse Auditorium \nIncluded with admission \nThis event includes loud\, sudden noises. \nJoin Jennifer and Gene Yee of Yee Magik to unveil the life and secrets of spiritualist and magician Anna Eva Fay! \nBorn in 1851\, Fay toured internationally as a medium and mentalist and became a household name during the late 19th and early 20th century. Together with her second husband David Pingree\, she also became a highly successful philanthropist\, collector and entrepreneur\, owning multiple quarries and a steamship line. The Fay-Pingree home in Melrose\, Massachusetts\, Heathman Manor\, was visited by Fay’s notable friends such as Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. \nFay’s great-grandniece Jennifer Yee and Jennifer’s husband Gene will present an interactive lecture on Fay\, who is still revered today. Follow the Yees’ decades-long search for lost history and genealogy as they tell how they came to reside at Heathman Manor and carry on Fay’s legacy. Besides broadsides\, lithographs and ephemera from Fay’s performances\, including one of her earliest-known public photos\, audience members might catch a glimpse of a levitating object or a galvanometer with which scientists attempted to divine Fay’s secrets! The performance will also offer a rare peek behind the scenes at spirit cabinets and their roles in art and performance. After a short Q & A\, be prepared to witness a rare performance of the cabinet — don’t blink\, or you’ll miss something! \nThe Yees will be available for a meet-and-greet in Morse Alcove after the performance.

DESCRIPTION:Know before you go\nVirtual event hosted on Zoom \nFree \nThis event series is a part of PEM Reads. \nContent warning: This book depicts violence\, gore\, animal killing\, cannibalism\, racism\, xenophobia and death. \nJoin us on select Wednesday evenings over Zoom for an amazing\, year-long PEM Reads journey through Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick! Set sail with Dan Lipcan\, the Ann C. Pingree Director of the Phillips Library and curator of our current exhibition Draw Me Ishmael: The Book Arts of Moby Dick\, and David Snider\, Director of Learning and Community Engagement. \nEach session of our voyage will feature a brief special presentation by Dan on the day’s reading and its connections to the exhibition\, followed by a lively discussion facilitated by David. By June 18\, 2025\, we will finish the book together\, exhausted but invigorated with new perspectives on this classic tale — and with the bragging rights that we have completed a Moby-Dick marathon! Participants who complete the book and attend all five sessions will win a special Moby-Dick-related prize from PEM. Join us for this free\, fun\, public event! \nWe will be using the Norton Critical Edition (3rd edition\, 2018) of Moby-Dick\, edited by Hershel Parker. SUMMARY:Event: The Mysteries of Anna Eva Fay
DESCRIPTION:Know before you go\nIn-person event\nLocation: Morse Auditorium \nIncluded with admission \nThis event includes loud\, sudden noises. \nJoin Jennifer and Gene Yee of Yee Magik to unveil the life and secrets of spiritualist and magician Anna Eva Fay! \nBorn in 1851\, Fay toured internationally as a medium and mentalist and became a household name during the late 19th and early 20th century. Together with her second husband David Pingree\, she also became a highly successful philanthropist\, collector and entrepreneur\, owning multiple quarries and a steamship line. The Fay-Pingree home in Melrose\, Massachusetts\, Heathman Manor\, was visited by Fay’s notable friends such as Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. \nFay’s great-grandniece Jennifer Yee and Jennifer’s husband Gene will present an interactive lecture on Fay\, who is still revered today. Follow the Yees’ decades-long search for lost history and genealogy as they tell how they came to reside at Heathman Manor and carry on Fay’s legacy. Besides broadsides\, lithographs and ephemera from Fay’s performances\, including one of her earliest-known public photos\, audience members might catch a glimpse of a levitating object or a galvanometer with which scientists attempted to divine Fay’s secrets! The performance will also offer a rare peek behind the scenes at spirit cabinets and their roles in art and performance. After a short Q & A\, be prepared to witness a rare performance of the cabinet — don’t blink\, or you’ll miss something! \nThe Yees will be available for a meet-and-greet in Morse Alcove after the performance.

How did this marine mammal evolve such an incredible tooth? What can narwhals tell us about biodiversity and adaptation in a changing Arctic? Join Harvard and Smithsonian research scientist Martin Nweeia on his decades-long quest to answer these questions\, and discover just how extraordinary this “unicorn of the sea” really is. \nNweeia’s ongoing research spans genetic studies\, physiology and mammalian dental studies to help explain nature’s most puzzling tooth\, along with narwhal behavior and adaptation in a changing Arctic. Join him at PEM for a presentation accompanied by documentary footage and photography that explores this elusive whale through innovative technologies with a focus on climate change and Inuit knowledge.
