Part of the beauty of New Orleans music is that it’s celebrated and appreciated wherever it goes\, from the street to the theater. \nThe Po Boys formed in 2012 to shake the walls of a local club on a Fat Tuesday but have honed their sound and become more than a Mardi Gras centerpiece. Exploring the vast musical traditions of New Orleans and expanding their repertoire to look beyond NOLA jazz\, the band includes traditional Caribbean tunes (it’s been said that New Orleans is the northernmost city in the Caribbean)\, as well as Meters funk\, soul\, and brass band / street beat music. \nThere are a myriad of traditions that flow into New Orleans culture just as there are tributaries that feed the Mississippi\, and the Po Boys are eager to explore what makes the music of New Orleans so damn special. You’ll hear the heavy influence of the New Orleans sound across the band and in the stories told by their original tunes. Despite the scope of its sound\, the outfit is only seven people\, and thrives on the interplay and group dynamics that bring this music to life.

In this new interactive talk series\, you’ll meet several musicians who speak about their own unique creative space. \nAbigale Reisman is a member of the International Jewish Music Festival award-winning Ezekiel’s Wheels Klezmer Band\, as well as a co-founder of Thread Ensemble\, an experimental trio that creates music out of interactions with their audiences. In this talk\, Abigale discusses the musical threads that connect classical and klezmer music. \nAbigale Reisman is a violinist\, composer\, improviser\, and educator. She is a co-founder of Thread Ensemble\, an experimental trio that creates music out of interactions with their audiences. She is a member of Tredici Bacci\, which was featured in Rolling Stone’s “10 Artists You Need to Know: November 2016”. She is also a composer\, arranger\, and performer in the International Jewish Music Festival award-winning band\, Ezekiel’s Wheels Klezmer Band. Abigale earned her Bachelor’s degree at The Manhattan School of Music in Classical Violin Performance and went on to receive her Master’s degree at The New England Conservatory in Contemporary Improvisation. She has toured the world performing klezmer\, classical\, pop\, and experimental music. Abigale has had the privilege to share the stage with great musicians such as Father John Misty\, David Krakauer\, Amanda Palmer\, Jeffery Zeigler\, Sarah Jarosz\, Hankus Netsky\, The Ballroom Thieves\, and Anthony Coleman.

By 19\, Livingston had recorded his first album\, and he has since been crafting original songs and interpreting classics\, earning a dedicated global fanbase. His hits like “Carolina Day” and “I Will Be in Love with You” have showcased his versatility across genres such as folk\, pop\, gospel\, and jazz. \nThroughout his career\, Livingston has performed with major artists such as Joni Mitchell and Fleetwood Mac\, and his concerts are known for their warmth and personal storytelling. His extensive touring\, both solo and with symphony orchestras\, highlights his dynamic stage presence and deep musical knowledge. Beyond performing\, Livingston has significantly contributed to music education\, teaching for over 30 years at Berklee College of Music and developing a renowned course on Stage Performance. His students include notable names like Charlie Puth and John Mayer. \nLivingston’s influence extends beyond the stage and classroom. He authored “Stage Performance\,” a comprehensive guide on enhancing performance skills\, drawing from over 5\,000 hours of stage experience. His achievements were celebrated in 2017 when Boston and Massachusetts declared January 18 as “Livingston Taylor Day.” The 2018 documentary “Livingston Taylor: Life is Good” further chronicled his life and career\, receiving international accolades. \nIn recent years\, Livingston released “LIVe – 50 Years of Livingston Taylor Live\,” a box set commemorating his extensive career\, and collaborated with American Public Television for “Livingston Taylor Live from Sellersville Theater: Songs and Stories.” Adapting to new teaching methods\, he launched “The Livingston Taylor Playbook” with True Fire\, an online masterclass in 2022. As of 2023\, Livingston recorded with the BBC Concert Orchestra\, planning to bring this collaboration to live audiences with performances featuring arrangements by Tony Award-winning composer Bill Elliott.

Under the direction of Griff Gall\, BBR has quickly developed a reputation for excellence\, regularly performing at Boston-area landmarks such as Faneuil Hall\, Symphony Hall\, the Boston Children’s Museum and the Prudential Center. Back Bay Ringers has also performed in festivities associated with the Democratic National Convention as well as the Boston Marathon. In 2016\, BBR was honored to perform at the Handbell Musicians of America National Seminar in Rochester\, NY\, and also made its debut with the Boston Pops. \nBBR was founded in 2004 as the nation’s first handbell ensemble dedicated to members and friends of the LGBT community\, and it remains open and affirming for the membership\, board\, and community. BBR performs both as a large ensemble and in smaller quartets throughout the year in both public settings and for private bookings\, and annually sponsors the Boston Handbell Festival. DESCRIPTION:Three of the North Shore’s most beloved songwriters and performers converge for A Seaside Yuletide\, a night of rootsy holiday spirit and song featuring Jon Butcher\, Allen Estes and Sal Baglio. \nJON BUTCHER\nCape Ann’s Jon Butcher is one of a select handful of influential recording artists comprising the legendary Boston music scene. Numerous MTV videos and hit songs comprise the underpinnings of a recording and touring career that continues today. A handful of critically acclaimed recordings\, Positively The Blues\, Barefoot Servants\, Electric Factory\, 2 Roads East and 360º mark Jon’s enduring love affair with the very fabric of American music. Butcher’s signature sound and particularly his guitar work represent a skillful mix of Americana — rock\, r&b\, jazz and folk\, all of it focused through a prism built from the blues. \nALLEN ESTES\nSongwriter Allen Estes grew up in a musical family\, the oldest son of professional musicians Estelle and Phil Estes in Gloucester\, MA and began playing at age six. Phil packed the family up in the car and literally took to the open road for musical adventures eventually leading to the forming of the Estes Boys\, Allen’s seminal band. The Estes Boys performed in and around New England and by the mid 80s Allen moved to Nashville\, TN\, writing and working with Tammy Wynette\, Robert Ellis Oral\, Lori Morgan\, and Shania Twain. After 10 years\, Gloucester called him back\, and in the 90s Allen recorded with writer Frank Tedesco. This turned into Allen’s last recording\, the Souls of the Sea album. Souls of the Sea is a collection of songs about the historic seaport and fishing town of Gloucester\, MA and the people who live there. \nSAL BAGLIO\nAs a singer\, guitarist and composer\, Sal Baglio has touched all the bases that have rounded out a successful musical career. But with his recent work as a solo artist\, Baglio embarks upon a new path that looks backward in the most delightful way. Baglio’s music and solo performances dial up a past that is easily imagined in a less-distracted age where music bursts boldly out of a car’s AM radio on a summer drive or floats in the imagination of a young solitary artist learning to strum his first guitar. Free of the demands of the music industry\, Baglio is liberated to recall the past without sentimentality but with a flourish of great stories that underpin his new songs — songs that aim for the gentle heart. Baglio will never be separated from the impulsive spirit of “American Fun\,” the hit he wrote with his legendary Boston band\, The Stompers\, that remains absolutely joyous in its sing-along refrain. Yet\, as he ages — and we with him — Baglio reveals where all that great music began and why.

DESCRIPTION:The original national PBS show Christmas with The Celts aired on over 200 PBS channels across the U.S.\, Canada and on the BBC in Ireland for three years. This successful TV show was the initial spark which created a huge demand for the production bringing them into Performing Arts Centers\, theaters and large casinos every year. The first live performance of Christmas with The Celts was in front of a sold-out audience at the original Grand Ole Opry (voted top venue by Pollstar) the world-famous Ryman Auditorium. \nCurrently celebrating 14 years of successful national touring\, Christmas with the Celts perform a wonderful combination of timeless ancient Irish Christmas Carols and lively Irish dance with modern contemporary songs but with Irish instrumentation. New Christmas hits\, Celts originals and fresh Irish Dance tunes are added to the show each year so that no 2 years are the same. Always a pleasant surprise. DESCRIPTION:Formed in 1997\, Lúnasa has long been one of contemporary Irish music’s leading voices. Named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honour of the Irish god Lugh\, the group that Folk Roots magazine once called an “Irish music dream team” was formed from members of some of Ireland’s greatest bands and over the years has proven its mettle time and again\, having sold over a quarter of a million records and collaborated with notable artists outside the tradition such as Natalie Merchant and Mary-Chapin Carpenter. They have performed more than 2\,000 shows across 36 countries including high-profile concert venues such as Carnegie Hall\, The Hollywood Bowl\, National Concert Hall (Dublin) and Paris Bercy\, and many of the leading festivals such as Glastonbury\, Womadelaide & Edmonton. \nFrom the start\, the band’s complex arrangements and unique sound reshaped the boundaries of traditional music and energized audiences the world over. DESCRIPTION:David Benoit was bitten by the jazz bug after watching a Charlie Brown special on television and listening to the music of Vince Guaraldi in 1965. “I was already a fan of the comic strip\,” he says\, “but when I heard that jazz piano trio\, that was the defining moment when I decided that I wanted to play like Vince Guaraldi.” \nFor four decades\, the GRAMMY®-nominated pianist/composer/ arranger David Benoit has reigned supreme as one the founding fathers of Contemporary Jazz. He has received three GRAMMY® nominations in the categories of Best Contemporary Jazz Performance for “Every Step of the Way” (1989)\, Best Large Ensemble Performance for GRP All-Star Big Band (1996)\, and Best Instrumental Composition for “Dad’s Room\,” the latter from the album Professional Dreamer (2000) and in 2010\, David Benoit received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Smooth Jazz Awards. In this new interactive talk series\, you’ll meet several musicians who speak about their own unique creative space. \nCanadian pianist Patricia Au is widely known for her vivacious playing and leads an active performing and coaching career. Ms. Au actively works in Boston as a vocal coach\, piano teacher\, and teaching artist. In this talk\, Patricia Au discusses the Art of Collaboration\, specifically what does it mean to be a collaborative pianist and vocal coach and how to be a connector in a multi-faceted world. \nExposed to art song since the age of ten\, Canadian pianist Patricia Au is widely known for her vivacious playing and leads an active performing and coaching career\, collaborating with vocalists and instrumentalists. She has appeared in such venues as Vancouver’s Chan Centre for Performing Arts\, Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts\, Boston’s Jordan Hall and Isabella Gardner Museum\, as well as the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. She has also toured throughout Canada\, Austria\, the United Kingdom\, and the United States. She often performs with Phoenix Ensemble (Boston) and music directs for Boston Opera Collaborative. A frequent performer of contemporary music\, she has workshopped works with their composers including Murray Adaskin\, Sofia Gulbaidulina\, John Greer\, John Harbison\, and Greg Zavracky. \nAs a recipient of various scholarships and grants\, Ms. Au has pursued additional studies focusing on art song and opera in Canada\, France\, Italy\, and Austria. She has performed for prominent musicians such as Sir Thomas Allen\, Elly Ameling\, Thomas Quasthoff\, and Malcolm Martineau. Ms. Au has studied at the Franz-Schubert Institut in Baden bei Wien\, Austria through the generosity of a Johann Strauss Foundation Scholarship awarded by the University of British Columbia. She was invited to the Académie Francis Poulenc in Tours\, France and performed Tel jour\, telle nuit for Poulenc’s extended family in Noizay. \nPassionate about dissolving the boundaries between song performance and scholarship\, she has studied and performed at the Vancouver International Song Institute. Not limiting her teaching approach to existing pedagogical models\, Ms. Au actively works in Boston as a vocal coach\, piano teacher\, and teaching artist. In the past\, she has served as faculty at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and has taught at New England Conservatory in Boston. During the summer months\, she is on faculty as a vocal coach/pianist for the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and during the academic year\, she teaches as part of the Opera Staff at Boston Conservatory at Berklee. SUMMARY:Arcis Saxophone Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Arcis Saxophone Quartet’s experimental artistry captivates audiences globally with unique performances and innovative formats\, while inspiring the next generation through workshops and school visits. \nIf you’ve ever been to Munich’s Königsplatz\, you may have spotted it: Arcisstrasse\, which gave its name to the Arcis Saxophone Quartet 15 years ago. Having long outgrown the “cosmopolitan city with a heart\,” the quartet is now one of the world’s most active classical ensembles. Whether on the highest pass in Ecuador\, in the middle of the Saudi Arabian desert\, on a rock in the American Atlantic\, or in the sold-out Philharmonie in Munich and Berlin… the four saxophonists feel at home everywhere with their music. \nAnd the adventure continues. On a trailer as an improvised stage through the provinces\, playing and pedaling through the city on a conference bike\, or with theatrical make-up on their faces: they approach their musical work with experimentation\, artistry\, and curiosity\, inventing not only new concert formats but even completely new artistic genres\, as recently demonstrated with their Arcis Collectiv\, which combines chamber music and contemporary dance in a joint performative act. \nSophisticated dramaturgy\, sound and lighting design\, and captivating presentations are just as much a part of the concert experience for the four multi-talented musicians as their energetic interpretations\, finely balanced original arrangements\, and commissioned compositions from all over the world\, which have been written to suit them. To always remain authentic\, their artistic vision flows into all areas of their work: After the two debut CDs “Arcis Saxophon Quartett spielt Enjott Schneider” (2013) with Ambiente Audio and “Rasch” (2017) with Genuin\, the quartet quickly founded their own record label\, Arcis Records\, and their own production company\, Arcis Visuals\, which takes care of the visual-media content. They learned their chamber music skills from the best of the best. They studied with the Artemis Quartet at the UdK in Berlin and at the European Chamber Music Academy (under Hatto Beyerle of the Alban Berg Quartet\, Prof. Johannes Meissl\, and others)\, as well as at the HMT Munich with Prof. Koryun Asatryan and Prof. Friedemann Berger. \nThey have won first prizes at the music competition of the Kulturkreis Gasteig e.V. (Munich; also audience prize)\, the international music competition Concorso Argento (Italy)\, and the First Classical Music International Internet Festival “Chance Music” (Russia). Additionally\, they have numerous other prizes in Italy\, Berlin and Russia. \nTo inspire the younger generation\, the musicians and the audiences of tomorrow\, the quartet has made education a priority: in ensemble workshops\, master classes\, and several dozen school visits a year\, they approach children and young people directly and skillfully inspire them with music and music-making. DESCRIPTION:The universe of guitar knows no boundaries for The California Guitar Trio. Since 1991\, the group has enthralled listeners with a singular sound that fearlessly crisscrosses genres. The trio’s questing spirit drives it to explore the intersections between rock\, jazz\, classical\, and world music. It even throws in the occasional surf or spaghetti Western tune for good measure. The trio’s output has made a major global impact\, having served as the soundtrack for Olympics coverage\, and programs on CNN\, CBS\, NBC\, and ESPN. \nCGT’s lineup is truly the sum of its distinct parts: A Utah native now residing in Los Angeles\, Paul Richards immersed himself in rock\, blues\, jazz\, and folk during his early days and while attending The University of Utah’s jazz guitar program. Bert Lams\, originally from Belgium\, graduated from the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels\, specializing in classical guitar. Tokyo-born Hideyo Moriya began his guitar journey with surf music and British rock\, before relocating to Boston to study at Berklee. \nAll three felt the call to push themselves to the limit by enrolling in Robert Fripp’s challenging Guitar Craft courses\, where they first met in 1987. They went on to tour together as part of Fripp’s League of Crafty Guitarists\, before forming the California Guitar Trio in Los Angeles four years later. \n25 years and 1\,800+ gigs later\, the CGT remains intensely committed to explore\, evolve and communicate a wide-ranging musical worldview.
