SUMMARY:MAY ERLEWINE
DESCRIPTION:One of the Midwest’s most prolific and passionate songwriters\, May Erlewine has a gift for writing songs of substance that feel both fresh and soulfully familiar. Balancing her heartbreak with an empowered and emboldened spirit\, she stresses the importance of environmental advocacy\, social justice\, creative empowerment and community building as necessary work in our world. \nMay Erleine’s ability to emotionally engage with an audience has earned her a dedicated following far beyond her Michigan roots. In her quest to find her most authentic self\, Erlewine gifts each listener with a powerful\, emotional experience that immediately connects us. \nRaised in a home full of art and music\, Erlewine began writing songs at a very young age. As a teenager she hitchhiked across the country\, honing her skills as a performer and absorbing the kind of stories and landscapes that would inform her music. Her songs show a very real connection and concern with everyday folk. Drawing from a wide variety of influences to create her sound\, lyrically\, her songs are rooted in hard-wrought wisdom\, joy and sorrow\, simplicity and stories from her own experiences. They wash over the audience like a tender hug. May is a magnetic solo performer and is also often supported by her carefully chosen backing bands. \nErlewine uses her music as a platform for positive change. She considers her job a service-oriented one and carries the torch of the folk-singer activist. Her voice on stage encourages connectedness and stresses the importance of environmental advocacy\, social justice\, creative empowerment and community building as necessary work for all of us. \nErlewine’s music has touched people all over the world. Her words have held solace for weary hearts\, offered a light in the darkness\, and held space for the pain and joy of being alive in these times. She is a true artist\, an anthem\, and another example of why we need to listen to women. We need to hear these stories. When she starts to sing\, there’s no way around it: The time is now. \nPlease Note: For some non-classical concerts\, the window behind the stage may need to be covered for acoustical purposes. We do not always know which artists will need the window closed\, but at a certain level of amplification\, it is necessary.

As well as presenting world-class traditional Celtic music\, our festival is committed to creating space for the evolution of the genre. We start the evening with the stunning solo Sean Nós voice of Madelyn Monaghan before shifting gears to the rip-roaring virtuosity of fiddle virtuoso Jeremy Kittel and his incredible trio. We’re also thrilled to present US-based Scottish fiddler Hannah Read’s new project “The Fungi Sessions” in which she presents an ecologically-inspired suite of fiddle and banjo music with accompanying visuals to immerse us all in the world of the underground mycelium networks. Rounding the evening off are American music icons Darol Anger and Bruce Molsky bringing together their respective experience in Old Time\, jazz and bluegrass music. Prepare to be transported! \nPlease Note: For some non-classical concerts\, the window behind the stage may need to be covered for acoustical purposes. SUMMARY:NATURALLY 7
DESCRIPTION:The hills are alive with the sound of … NATURALLY 7! Yes\, the boys are going to the movies to produce some of the greatest movie music ever in their own amazing style. Back by popular demand\, a cappella sensation Naturally 7 has catapulted the genre well into the 21st century by reinventing it with their distinct style of “vocal play.” \nStunning! Sensational! Fantastic!—those are just a few of the reactions when someone experiences NATURALLY 7 for the first time. It’s a universal language because that same reaction has erupted throughout Europe\, the USA\, Asia\, Australia and just about everywhere around this music-loving planet. \nIt would be easy to say that they are the unsung heroes of music but that would be totally wrong because NATURALLY 7 are not ‘unsung’ and they certainly can sing – plus some! They not only provide the voices of song but they provide the sound of the instruments as well! Yes\, they brilliantly create their own backing band without any real instruments at all\, and guess what? The sound they create is Stunning! Sensational! Fantastic! Really? Oh yes! That’s why NATURALLY 7 has toured in support of Michael Bublé so many times as well as being personally requested to work with global stars like Diana Ross\, Stevie Wonder\, Lionel Ritchie\, Quincy Jones\, Coldplay and numerous other greats. What makes them so special? Why are they in such demand and constantly being asked on guest on major TV shows all over the world? It’s partly because of who they are\, but mostly\, it’s because of what they do. They are an a cappella group plus some! Perhaps we should ask founder\, musical director arranger\, baritone and pretty talented rapper Roger Thomas to introduce us properly to the magnificent NATURALLY 7. \n“It really began when my brother Warren and I moved to New York from Manchester—yes\, we were two English kids. Our dad had a gospel group which had continually been touring Britain before we moved to the States and so\, as you can imagine\, we were brought up in a musical family and also a musical family that performed. “Well we grew up properly in the Bronx and then in Queens and just about anyone who was anyone in music appeared in New York so we were there taking it all on board and loving Hip Hop which was in its early days then. So our influences were Dad\, the stars of the day\, music and the thrill of performance. We have had some great stepping stones on this journey. We have had many great music stars come to see us – that is very flattering and they come up to speak to you afterwards and you feel like asking for their autograph. We are both a visual and an audio act and at first I thought we would never be suitable for radio but I was wrong and we are often asked to do appear on radio shows and we love it. It is so very different.” \n“I am often asked what we do and how we do it. Well\, what we do is sing\, but at the same time\, we each impersonate musical instruments and create a wall of sound without anyone playing anything. We are also very visual. We don’t just stand like a choir but use the stage and bump into each other now and then!” \n“We have had quite a few albums released and another one being worked on\, which is a departure for us\, but we are looking forward to it. That is one of the keys to us keeping so fresh—we are always looking at new challenges\, new numbers\, new places. It keeps the journey still exciting for us and hopefully that infects everyone who comes to see us. We love what we do and we love audiences becoming part of the show. We even enjoy the travelling and whether it is Europe\, Australia\, Asia\, the US or anywhere else\, we also leave wishing to come back as soon as possible. Music is such great therapy\, it embodies love\, fun and a vibrancy that sweeps away problems and brings people together to celebrate the gift of life.” \nPlease Note: For some non-classical concerts\, the window behind the stage may need to be covered for acoustical purposes. We do not always know which artists will need the window closed\, but at a certain level of amplification\, it is necessary.

SUMMARY:TUBA SKINNY
DESCRIPTION:The pride of New Orleans’ vibrant and fertile trad jazz scene\, Tuba Skinny returns to Rockport for two shows! The beloved Crescent City collective started out over a decade ago as show-stopping French Quarter street buskers and have since turned into one of New Orleans’ greatest musical ambassadors\, touring the world with their delicious\, spirited takes on Depression-era blues\, spirituals\, ragtime and traditional jazz. They’re touring in support of their joyful new release\, Hot Town. \n“masterful and exuberant”- OffBeat Magazine\nOfficially forming in in 2009\, Tuba Skinny has steadily evolved from a loose collection of street musicians into an ensemble dedicated to bringing the traditional New Orleans sound to audiences around the world. Before becoming Tuba Skinny\, the core of the band played in an assortment of bands on the streets of the French Quarter in the years following Hurricane Katrina. Those bands\, the folkie punk Dean Man Street Orchestra (which included singer-songwriter Alynda Segarra of the acclaimed Hurray for the Riff Raff) and Loose Marbles both had an enormous effect on the musical culture of New Orleans\, particularly its burgeoning revivalist jazz scene. From the start\, Tuba Skinny’s home was on Royal Street in the French Quarter\, drawing huge crowds for their jubilant hipster take on trad jazz. They soon began touring the country and then even Europe\, playing in clubs and busking around city centers. \nDrawing on a wide range of musical influences\, their sound evokes the rich musical heritage of their New Orleans home. The band has gained a loyal following through their distinctive sound\, their commitment to reviving long-lost songs\, and their barnstorming live performances. They’ve released 12 full-length records\, the most recent ones being 2019’s Some Kinda Skake\, 2020’s Quarantine Album: Unreleased B-sides\, Magnolia Stroll\, and the just released Hot Town. \nWINDOW NOTICE: Due to the volume level of certain concerts\, the curtain may be closed over the window for acoustical purposes. All efforts will be made to keep the view available prior to the concert. \nHappens on the following Dates:\nSep 1\, 2024\, 4:00pm to 5:00pm Timezone: EDT\nSep 1\, 2024\, 7:00pm to 8:00pm Timezone: EDT

SUMMARY:Guest Presentation: MICHAEL DUTRA & THE STRICTLY SINATRA BAND
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as one of the finest interpreters of the Sinatra sound in the world\, Rhode Island native Michael Dutra has been performing his tribute to Frank Sinatra across the nation—from Las Vegas to Miami to Boston—since 2002. Boston Globe columnist Wesley Morris remarked that “his sound is velour to Sinatra’s velvet. You really can’t tell the difference.” Ron Della Chiesa of WPLM Boston Radio and Sinatra Guru adds\, “Michael literally channels Sinatra.” \nMost of Michael’s influence comes from his dad. “Dad was always singing Sinatra songs throughout the house\, and I would remember the lyrics and join him from time to time\, even at the early age of 7.” \nMichael performed at the world famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City opening for Howie Mandel. He continues to perform nearly 275 nights a year in clubs\, dinner theatres\, performing arts centers\, corporate events and private parties. His true passion comes out when he is performing with his own Strictly Sinatra Band. Michael recently recorded the vocals for a “Twix candy bar commercial” being viewed in South America by millions of people every day. \n“His sound is velour to Sinatra’s velvet.”\n– The Boston Globe \nPlease Note: For some non-classical concerts\, the window behind the stage may need to be covered for acoustical purposes. We do not always know which artists will need the window closed\, but at a certain level of amplification\, it is necessary.
