We’re also thrilled to present US-based Scottish fiddler Hannah Read’s new project “The Fungi Sessions” in which she presents an ecologically-inspired suite of fiddle and banjo music with accompanying visuals to immerse us all in the world of the underground mycelium networks. Rounding the evening off are American music icons Darol Anger and Bruce Molsky bringing together their respective experience in Old Time\, jazz and bluegrass music. We have had many great music stars come to see us – that is very flattering and they come up to speak to you afterwards and you feel like asking for their autograph. We are both a visual and an audio act and at first I thought we would never be suitable for radio but I was wrong and we are often asked to do appear on radio shows and we love it. It is so very different.” \n“I am often asked what we do and how we do it. Well\, what we do is sing\, but at the same time\, we each impersonate musical instruments and create a wall of sound without anyone playing anything. We are also very visual. DESCRIPTION:The pride of New Orleans’ vibrant and fertile trad jazz scene\, Tuba Skinny returns to Rockport for two shows! The beloved Crescent City collective started out over a decade ago as show-stopping French Quarter street buskers and have since turned into one of New Orleans’ greatest musical ambassadors\, touring the world with their delicious\, spirited takes on Depression-era blues\, spirituals\, ragtime and traditional jazz. They’re touring in support of their joyful new release\, Hot Town. \n“masterful and exuberant”- OffBeat Magazine\nOfficially forming in in 2009\, Tuba Skinny has steadily evolved from a loose collection of street musicians into an ensemble dedicated to bringing the traditional New Orleans sound to audiences around the world. Before becoming Tuba Skinny\, the core of the band played in an assortment of bands on the streets of the French Quarter in the years following Hurricane Katrina. Those bands\, the folkie punk Dean Man Street Orchestra (which included singer-songwriter Alynda Segarra of the acclaimed Hurray for the Riff Raff) and Loose Marbles both had an enormous effect on the musical culture of New Orleans\, particularly its burgeoning revivalist jazz scene. From the start\, Tuba Skinny’s home was on Royal Street in the French Quarter\, drawing huge crowds for their jubilant hipster take on trad jazz. They soon began touring the country and then even Europe\, playing in clubs and busking around city centers. \nDrawing on a wide range of musical influences\, their sound evokes the rich musical heritage of their New Orleans home. The band has gained a loyal following through their distinctive sound\, their commitment to reviving long-lost songs\, and their barnstorming live performances. DESCRIPTION:Canadian folk band Còig’s dynamic duo brings their latest music to Rockport as part of a dozen-year journey that has included tours across North America\, Europe and Australia. Còig has received multiple East Coast Music Awards\, Canadian Folk Music Awards and a JUNO Award nomination. \nSince being presented the Tic Butler Memorial Award during Celtic Colours in 2007\, Rachel Davis’ music career has taken off. The fiddler and singer from Baddeck\, Victoria County was chosen as the 2009 recipient of the Frank “Big Sampie” Sampson award\, leading to the release of her debut album that year. She released her second album\, Turns in 2013\, which was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award\, and two East Coast Music Awards\, including New Artist Recording of the Year. \nDarren McMullen is a highly sought-after multi-instrumentalist whose list of instruments includes mandolin\, bouzouki\, tenor banjo\, whistles\, guitar and bass—but he started out on piano as a youngster. He has since released three solo albums and been busy touring and recording as a sideman with a wide range of bands including the Rankin family\, Matt Andersen\, David Francey and many Cape Breton fiddlers. \nRachel and Darren have been touring and recording together since 2012 with their band Còig\, traveling all over North America\, Europe and Australia. Còig has released five albums\, receiving multiple East Coast Music Awards\, Canadian Folk Music Awards\, and a JUNO Award nomination in 2018. \nAs a separate project\, Darren and Rachel have started work on a duo recording which will be released in Fall 2023.

Like a harmonic seventh note sliding its way into a piece of music before being felt\, he would eventually emerge into the New England blues scene as a budding young guitarist. Going solo in 1988\, Earl would go on to become a beloved solo blues act\, recording dozens of albums and playing with scores of some of the greatest blues performers in the history of the genre. \nRonnie Earl has played alongside such legends as Hubert Sumlin\, Earl King\, Muddy Waters\, Junior Wells\, Kim Wilson and the Fabulous Thunderbirds\, Jimmie Vaughan\, Stevie Ray Vaughan\, Carlos Santana\, Eric Clapton\, The Allman Brothers Band and many others\, including\, B.B. Supernatural Thing\, Ward’s 2023 album\, features original songs sound freshly pulled from the ground\, with a little earth sticking to them. Ward’s lyric delivery has that slight rawness the ear loves\, and his voice has quiet dignity and great tenderness. Supernatural Thing is an open-hearted\, inviting album. \nThe album’s guest stars — First Aid Kit\, Shovels & Rope\, Scott McMicken\, Neko Case\, Jim James\, others — enliven the album with surprises. On “Too Young to Die\,” the women’s voices in First Aid Kit spread a light frosting over the melody\, and their Beach Boys-like chorus on “Engine 5” makes the song sound like an instant hit. Since then\, Stella has appeared across North America\, Europe\, and Asia in numerous concerto\, recital\, and chamber music performances. She appears frequently with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center both in New York and on tour. \nStella has appeared as a chamber musician in festivals including the Ravinia\, Seattle Chamber Music and several others. Chamber music partners include Itzhak Perlman\, James Ehnes and Matthew Lipman. She is the inaugural recipient of the Robert Levin Award from Harvard University\, where she was inspired by Robert Levin himself. She received her doctorate from the Juilliard School where she now serves as teaching assistant to her longtime mentor Li Lin. Stella plays the 1720 General Kyd Stradivarius\, on generous loan from Dr. Ryuji Ueno and Rare Violins in Consortium\, Artists and Benefactors Collaborative\, and the 1708 Huggins Stradivarius courtesy of the Nippon Music Foundation.

BACH: Brandenburg Concerto No. 5\, BWV 1050 \nMahan Esfahani\, harpsichord\nMahan Esfahani has established himself as the first harpsichordist in a generation whose work spans virtually all areas of classical music-making from critically-acclaimed performances and recordings of the standard repertoire to working with the leading composers of the day to pioneering concerto appearances with major symphony orchestras on four continents. He was the first and only harpsichordist to be a BBC New Generation Artist (2008-2010)\, a Borletti-Buitoni prize winner (2009)\, and a nominee for Gramophone’s Artist of the Year (2014\, 2015\, 2017. As a concerto soloist\, he has performed with major symphonies and chamber orchestras and contemporary music ensembles around the world. \nEsfahani’s work with new and modern music is particularly acclaimed\, with high-profile solo and concertante commissions from composers such as George Lewis\, Brett Dean\, Bent Sørensen and other contemporary voices. His commitment to exploring the contemporary voice for the harpsichord is reflected in his 2020 Hyperion release ‘Musique?’ – a compilation of electronic and acoustic works including the modern revival of Luc Ferrari’s 1974 Programme commun for harpsichord and tape. In recognition of his contributions to the classical music field\, Mahan Esfahani was awarded the 2022 Wigmore Hall Prize. \nHis richly-varied discography for Hyperion and Deutsch Grammophon – including an ongoing series of the complete works of Bach for the former – has been acclaimed in the press with a Gramophone award\, two BBC Music Magazine Awards\, a Diapason d’Or\, ‘Choc de Classica\,’ an ICMA\, as well as numerous Editor’s Choices including a spot in the Telegraph’s compilation of essential classical music and the New York Times List of Top Recordings. He now makes his home in Prague. \nViano String Quartet\nLucy Wang\, violin | Hao Zhou\, violin | Aiden Kane\, viola | Tate Zawadiuk\, cello\nPraised for their “virtuosity\, visceral expression\, and rare unity of intention” (Boston Globe)\, the Viano Quartet is one of the most sought-after performing young ensembles today and currently in-residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Bowers Program from 2024-2027. Since winning First Prize at the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition\, they have traveled to nearly every major city across the globe. The quartet was named the inaugural June Goldsmith Quartet-in-Residence for the Music in the Morning series in Vancouver (through 2025)\, where their focus will be to commission new works and lead extensive community engagement initiatives. He was co-founder of the St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ)\, and currently serves as both the Associate Dean and Director of Chamber Music at the Glenn Gould School and Dean of the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He also serves as Executive Director of the Banff International String Quartet Competition. \nJeremy McCoy\, double bass\nFor 35 seasons\, Jeremy McCoy served as the Co-Principal double bass for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra\, playing in more than 5\,000 performances under music directors James Levine and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. He retired from that position in 2020\, but continues to be a highly sought after artist in orchestral and chamber settings. McCoy has performed as concerto soloist with the Atlantic Chamber Orchestra\, the Louisiana Philharmonic\, Classical Tahoe\, the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and Musica Viva of New York. His interest in authentic performance has included collaborations with period-instrument ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. \nHe has recorded the Chopin Cello Sonata with Dénes Várjon for Hyperion using one of Chopin’s own pianos. Bach as well as sonatas by Handel and Scarlatti. \nMr. Isserlis is also a keen exponent of contemporary music and has premiered many new works including John Tavener’s The Protecting Veil\, Thomas Adès’s Lieux retrouvés\, and Stephen Hough’s Sonata for Cello and Piano\, Left Hand (Les Adieux). In 2016\, he gave the UK premiere of Olli Mustonen’s Frei\, aber einsam at the Wigmore Hall. \nHis recording of J.S. Bach’s complete Solo Cello Suites for Hyperion met with the highest critical acclaim and was Gramophone’s Instrumental Album of the Year and Critics’ Choice at the Classic BRITS. Other recent releases include a Grammy-nominated album of sonatas by Martinů\, the Brahms Double Concerto with Joshua Bell and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields\, and concertos by Haydn and C.P.E. In 1993 she was awarded the Sylva Gelber Award for most outstanding classical artist under age 30. At the age of nine\, she made her orchestral debut with Mendelssohn’s first Piano Concerto with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. \n​As soloist\, she has appeared with orchestras throughout Canada\, the U.S. and Europe. She has performed countless solo recitals worldwide as well as chamber music performances with many world-renowned musicians. To critical acclaim\, she appears regularly in recital with cellist Steven Isserlis and has performed at concert venues across Germany with the cellist Manuel Fischer-Dieskau\, with whom she recorded the first-ever CD of the Sonatas for Piano and Cello by Carl Reinecke and the complete Beethoven sonatas. \nMs. Shih’s performances are frequently broadcast via television and radio on CBC\, BBC\, SWR\, NDR and WDR\, as well as on other various television and radio stations in North America and Europe.
