He was also the inaugural Artist-in-Association of the New York Philharmonic from 2014-17. In November 2023\, Barnatan releases his album\, Rachmaninoff Reflections\, offering some of the composer’s most cherished piano works\, including his Moments musicaux\, Prelude in G-Sharp Minor\, and Barnatan’s own arrangement of the Vocalise. \nEqually at home as a curator and chamber musician\, Barnatan is Music Director of La Jolla Music Society Summerfest in California\, one of leading music festivals in the country. SUMMARY:JAKE SHIMABUKURO
DESCRIPTION:Reinventing the ukulele into an instrument of seemingly boundless capabilities\, Hawaii native Jake Shimabukuro fuses his deft fingerpicking technique into a unique style that includes elements of jazz\, blues\, funk\, rock\, bluegrass\, classical\, folk\, and flamenco. The virtuoso will be returning to Rockport for a special\, intimate duo format likely to include his jaw-dropping interpretations of pop classics (“Bohemian Rhapsody\,” “Hallelujah”) as well as his own thrilling compositions. \nShimabukuro was given his first ukulele at age 4 and never looked back. His mother\, an accomplished ukulele musician in her own right\, got him started and soon the Honolulu native started performing in and around Hawaii and developing his own fanbase. He joined the acclaimed Hawaii trio Pure Heart and later the band Colón before going out on his own in 2002. Shimabukoru first gained mainstream recognition in Japan (where he frequently tours)\, releasing several records that became hits in Japan. \nBut it wasn’t until a friend posted a clip of the young ukulele maestro on YouTube that Shimabukuro broke out into the American market. The clip\, a cover of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” went viral and soon he was getting collaboration requests from stars including Jimmy Buffett\, Béla Fleck\, Ziggy Marley\, Cyndi Lauper\, and Yo-Yo Ma. He toured with Buffett in 2005\, 2006 and 2007\, and is featured on several of Buffett’s albums and videos\, including his 2007 CD/DVD release Live in Anguilla. \nHis records began getting major distribution and radio play\, the budding worldwide star finding a sweet spot between pop\, world\, bluegrass and classical\, mixing in pop covers with his own intricate compositions. His 2011 release\, Peace Love and Ukelele rose to #1 on Billboard’s world music charts. Subsequent records like 2012’s orchestral Grand Ukelele and 2015’s more intimate Travels showcased the breadth of Shimabukuro’s talent and interests. Pulitzer-Prize winner Caroline Shaw’s landmark string quartet Entr’acte\, the centerpiece of The Westerlies’ 2023 release\, is presented alongside the title track from their 2020 release Wherein Lies the Good by Robin Holcomb. The program continues with folk songs adapted from Sam Amidon and Nico Muhly\, whose genre-expanding work has inspired The Westerlies since the ensemble’s formation at The Juilliard School over a decade ago. From Carnegie Hall to Coachella\, The Westerlies navigate a wide array of venues and projects with the precision of a string quartet\, the audacity of a rock band\, and the charm of a family sing-along. \n“Chamber music with bracing melodies and\, crucially\, an undeniable sense of fun.” LA Times\nFormed in 2011\, the self-described “accidental brass quartet” takes its name from the prevailing winds that travel from the West to the East. The Westerlies explore jazz\, roots\, and chamber music influences to create the rarest of hybrids: music that is both “folk-like and composerly\, lovely and intellectually rigorous” (NPR Music). \nThe ensemble has produced numerous critically acclaimed albums of genre-defying music. 2022 saw the release of the Songbook Vol. 2 and Live at TOURISTS on Westerlies Records\, the ensemble’s in-house record label. From Academy Award®-nominated directing duo Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers\, The Last Repair Shop grants an all-access pass to the nondescript downtown warehouse where a dwindling handful of devoted craftspeople keep over 80\,000 student instruments in good repair. \nThis film\, which won the 2024 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short\, tells the story of four unassuming heroes who ensure no student is deprived of the joy of music. He performs on two exceptionally rare violins: the Titan Guarneri Del Gesu violin from 1741\, on loan from CANIMEX INC. in Drummondville\, Quebec\, Canada\, and the Engleman Stradivarius violin from 1709\, on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation in Japan. \nClayton Stephenson\, piano\nAmerican pianist Clayton Stephenson’s love for music is immediately apparent in his joyous charisma onstage\, expressive power\, and natural ease at the instrument. Hailed for “extraordinary narrative and poetic gifts” and interpretations that are “fresh\, incisive and characterfully alive” (Gramophone)\, he is committed to making an impact on the world through his music-making. \nGrowing up in New York City\, Clayton started piano lessons at age 7 and was accepted into the Juilliard Outreach Music Advancement Program for underprivileged children the next year\, advancing at the age of 10 to Juilliard’s elite Pre-College program. He credits the generous support of community programs with providing him with musical inspiration and resources along the way. \nHe now studies in the Harvard-NEC Dual Degree Program\, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in economics at Harvard and a master’s degree in piano performance at the New England Conservatory under Wha Kyung Byun. Also just released on Reference Recordings is the complete Beethoven concerti with Sir Donald Runnicles and the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra. \nAn avid chamber musician\, Mr. Ohlsson has collaborated with the Cleveland\, Emerson\, Tokyo and Takacs string quartets. His recording with the latter of the Amy Beach and Elgar quintets released by Hyperion in 2020 received great press attention. Mr. Ohlsson has also appeared in recital with such legendary singers as Magda Olivero\, Jessye Norman and Ewa Podleś. Among Mr. Ohlsson’s many awards and competition prizes\, it was his 1970 triumph at the International Chopin Competition\, where he won the Gold Medal (and remains the single American to have done so)\, that brought him worldwide recognition as one of the finest pianists of his generation. In recognition of the Chopin Bicentenary in 2010\, Mr. Ohlsson was featured in a documentary “The Art of Chopin” co-produced by Polish\, French\, British and Chinese television stations and in August 2018 the Polish Deputy Culture Minister awarded him with the Gloria Artis Gold Medal for cultural merit. \nMr. Ohlsson can be heard on several major labels such as RCA Victor Red Seal\, Nonesuch\, Telarc and Hyperion. DESCRIPTION:The rising star folk artist\, part of the vanguard of African American roots musicians reimagining Americana\, makes his Rockport debut! A powerfully gifted musician and a scholar of Black American music\, Jake Blount speaks ardently about the African roots of the banjo and the subtle\, yet profound ways African Americans have shaped and defined the amorphous categories of roots music and Americana. \nAn award-winning musician and scholar based in Providence\, RI\, Blount is half of the internationally touring duo Tui\, a 2020 recipient of the Steve Martin Banjo Prize\, and a two-time winner of the Appalachian String Band Music Festival (better known as Clifftop). A specialist in the early folk music of Black Americans\, Blount is a skilled performer of spirituals\, blues and string band repertoire. Blount has performed at the Kennedy Center\, the Newport Folk Festival\, NPR’s Tiny Desk\, and numerous other venues across and beyond the United States. His most recent album\, The New Faith\, is the latest installment of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings’ African American Legacy Series. \nBlount released his debut solo album\, Spider Tales\, on May 29\, 2020 through Free Dirt Records. Produced by Jeff Claus and Judy Hyman (of the Horse Flies) and featuring Tatiana Hargreaves\, Nic Gareiss\, Rachel Eddy and Haselden Ciaccio\, the album debuted at #2 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart and received widespread critical praise. Spider Tales later appeared on “Best of 2020” lists from NPR\, Bandcamp\, The New Yorker\, The Guardian\, and elsewhere. It was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2021 International Folk Music Awards\, and received “Best of the Americas” at the Songlines Music Awards in the same year. \nBlount’s latest record\, The New Faith\, was released on September 23\, 2022 as part of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings’ African American Legacy Series\, in collaboration with the National Museum of African American History and Culture. An Afrofuturist concept album\, The New Faith explores traditional Black religious music as it might exist post-climate crisis. The album received widespread critical acclaim\, garnering five-star reviews from The Telegraph\, Songlinesand Financial Times and receiving positive coverage from outlets including NPR\, Bandcamp\, The Guardian\, The Los Angeles Times and more.
