JULY 12 – 15: HISTORIC HOMES IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD
Tuesday, July 12: Explore the White-Ellery House
Built in 1710 as a home for a minister and his family, the house would later became a tavern for a period of time. The first portion of the morning (9:00 to 11:00) will be spent at the Museum learning about the architecture of the house and the lives of its residents. Children will need to be picked up from the Museum at 11:00 a.m. and caretakers will then have the option of going to the White-Ellery House for a family tour of this architecturally significant building, located on the site of Cape Ann’s first settlement. The White-Ellery House is located at 245 Washington Street in Gloucester by the Grant Circle Rotary.

Wednesday, July 13: Inspiration Is All Around Us
Join Museum staff for an architectural walking tour of Gloucester’s historic downtown, then take inspiration from the walk and create a historical skyline watercolor painting in the Activity Center at the Museum.

Thursday, July 14: How are Buildings Made?
Phillips & Holloran, Architects (1890s through 1950s) designed and built private residences, civic buildings, summer hotels, artist studios and commercial structures throughout Cape Ann. Learn about the planning that goes into creating the buildings that surround us. Using an architect’s traditional tools take a turn at drawing up plans of your own home, a favorite building or design your own.

Friday, July 15: Explore a Ship Captain’s House
Learn about the architecture of the Federal-style Captain Elias Davis House (1804) and how the very large Davis family (13 children!) all lived there. See what the Davis children did for fun, and make your own toy or stitch a sampler.
