DESCRIPTION:Walker Hancock was one of the premier American sculptors of the 20th century and a highly engaged and respected member of the Cape Ann community. Michael Lafferty is a skilled photographer who spent hours photographing Hancock in his Lanesville studio\, creating a series of intimate portraits of the sculptor at work. Romano and his work were larger-than-life\, and his concern for the human condition was the focus of most if not all of his artwork. Susan Erony will present on Romano’s work for the Federal Arts Program. \nSusan Erony is an artist in Gloucester\, whose work focuses on issues of humanity. She has exhibited extensively in Europe\, Canada\, and United States\, and her work is in numerous public and private collections. She has consulted with organizations on the relationship of art to society\, written\, taught\, and lectured on art history and art\, practice and organized exhibitions on subjects ranging from the use of artistic devices and creating prejudice to those showcasing\, the work of one artist. \nImage: New England Tragedy\, oil on canvas\, 1934. DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Pride Month\, the Cape Ann Museum is hosting its first Pride Family Picnic at the Cape Ann Museum Green (CAM Green) as part of Cape Ann Pride Weekend. The free event will be held on Sunday\, June 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. and will feature fun for the whole family through books\, art\, and music. \nFamilies are invited to bring their own blankets to enjoy Rainbow Story Time\, the Genders of the Sea\, and music from Jammin’ with You on the CAM Green campus\, located at 13 Poplar St. in Gloucester off Grant Circle. There will also be a curated collection of LGBTQ+ stories with Sawyer Free Library\, art activities\, and free lunches made available by The Open Door. Registration is required. SUMMARY:CAM Studio Course: Introduction to Drawing from Sculpture with Leon Doucette
DESCRIPTION:In this six-week course (February 1 – March 7\, 2024) students will learn the mechanics of drawing from life while working directly from pieces in the Cape Ann Museum’s sculpture collection. Lessons will emphasize the importance of structure\, seeing\, and understanding how light and form interact. The course will include instruction\, demonstrations\, and of course drawing! Students will make both shorter sketches and longer finished drawings and will be encouraged to apply the concepts they learn to their work. \nClasses will be led by artist and Cape Ann Museum Assistant Curator\, Leon Doucette. Leon was born in Gloucester and is a graduate of the New Hampshire Institute of Art. He has served on the Cape Ann Museum’s curatorial staff since 2011 and is a practicing artist\, working in both oil paint and charcoal. He has exhibited throughout New England\, as well as in New York\, California\, and Washington D.C. He is a recipient of the First Place Drawing award at the Portrait Society of America’s Annual International Portrait Competition and is a Guild of Boston Artists Gold Medalist. \nStudents of all drawing levels (from beginner to advanced) are encouraged to attend. One-on-one discussions will be tailored to students’ skill levels.
