He spent some summers in Gloucester\, joining several major American painters in the region at the invitation of Frank Duveneck (1848-1919). Join us to learn about Hassam’s work\, the art colonies he participated in\, and his Impressionist view of Gloucester. \nYou are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. SUMMARY:CAM Talk – Mending Movement: Sail Repair in the Early Maritime Atlantic\, with Emily Whitted
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 2\, 2025\n3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nJanet & William Ellery James Center\nCAM Green\, 13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nCAM Members Free\, Non-Members $10\nRegistration is required as space is limited. \nIn the age of sail\, the efficient movement of people and goods around the early maritime Atlantic world relied on the strength of woven fabric and the means to repair it successfully. Sails underwent extensive wear and required regular maintenance and repair work completed by sailors onboard ships while at sea or by sailmakers while in ports. By focusing on ship sails as a technology of maritime movement\, sailcloth repair offers insights into the value of repair practices within maritime businesses. Using extant material culture and archival documents from New England’s many maritime collections\, this presentation traces the history of sail repair inside sailmakers’ lofts\, on the decks of ships\, and within marine insurance policies. \nEmily Whitted is a PhD candidate in History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst whose work focuses on early American history\, material culture\, and public history. Her dissertation project\, “Darned\, Patched\, and Mended: Repairing Textiles in Early America\,” examines early American textile repair work as an integral\, everyday practice completed with needles and thread to maintain fabric’s life cycles within homes\, ships\, and military camps. Wharf Studio\, Gloucester reflects one such visit in 1958. Blaine was educated in representational\, realist\, and abstract methods of painting\, and was heavily influenced by the instruction of Abstract Expressionist Hans Hofmann (1880-1966). \nYou are invited to join us on Thursdays for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Education Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. Join us for a deep dive to learn about the coat and the Gloucester families behind the story. \nJoin us Thursdays for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent\, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation\, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Center\, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 7\, 2025\n3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nJanet & William Ellery James Center\, CAM Green\n13 Poplar Street\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nCAM Members Free\, Non-Members $10\nRegistration is Required as space is limited. \nDesigning\, building and installing a pipe organ is often a years-long process from initial client meetings through design\, shop construction\, installation\, and voicing\, to the dedicatory concert. At this Gallery Talk\, Greg Bover will discuss the collaborative process along with the history of C. B. Fisk. \nGreg Bover retired from C.B. Fisk\, Inc. in 2020 after 42 years as Project Manager\, designer\, and Vice President for Operations. He supervised the design and construction of more than thirty Fisk instruments in churches\, concert halls\, and academic institutions across the United States and around the world\, including The Memorial Church at Harvard\, the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas\, organs at Kobe and Yokohama\, and the firm’s magnum opus at the Cathedral in Lausanne\, Switzerland. \nGreg lives in Rockport with his wife Maureen Aylward. Long active in community building\, he is a Past President of the Sawyer Free Library and the Gloucester Rotary Club. He continues to serve on the Government Affairs Council of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce\, is a Trustee of the Awesome Gloucester micro-grant foundation and is a Corporator of the Cape Ann Savings Bank. Honors include a Restoration Award from the Gloucester Historical Commission\, and citizenship awards from the Rotary Club\, Unitarian Universalist Church\, and the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce. An avid sailor and woodworker\, he is board president\, crew member\, and ship’s carpenter on the 122-foot\, 1926 schooner Adventure. Greg holds a Master’s Credential for vessels up to 200 tons. C.B.
