DESCRIPTION:Join Us Mid-Day for Artful Conversations\nTake a midday pause and experience one work of art in depth. \nArtful Conversations are informal\, docent-led gallery experiences that invite visitors to slow down\, look closely\, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Each session features a work of art or object that is new to view—whether a recent acquisition or a work newly installed in the galleries. \nThe program begins in the Education Room at our Downtown Campus with a brief introduction and visual context before moving into the galleries for an extended exploration of the featured work. Guided by observation\, curiosity\, and conversation\, participants are encouraged to share ideas\, consider different perspectives\, and discover new connections together. \nThis week for Artful Conversations \nIn 2025\, CAM acquired two 2023 photographs by Matika Wilbur as part of the Museum’s Native Initiatives\, a project that culminated in a landmark exhibition of Wilbur’s work at the CAM Green. Wilbur’s work reshapes how Indigenous Peoples are represented across the United States\, centering contemporary Native identity and celebrating the vibrancy of Indigenous culture today. \nPlease join CAM docent Maggie Rosa for an engaging conversation as she reflects on what these photographs reveal—about the photographer\, about the individuals portrayed\, and about the evolving stories they invite us to understand more deeply. \nBorn and raised in England\, Maggie Rosa moved to the Chicago in 1968 to work as a research technician at the University of Chicago. During her eight years in Chicago\, she married Joe and obtained her PhD. The two of them did post-doctoral research at Yale and then moved to Cambridge to join the nascent biotech world. They eventually built a weekend home in Gloucester. In 2001 they “saw the light” and moved here permanently to participate in this great community. Maggie is an active volunteer in local organizations\, most recently the City Hall Restoration Commission\, Gloucester Education Foundation\, Cape Ann Museum\, and Generous Gardeners. As a Cape Ann Museum docent\, she serves as an ambassador for Gloucester by introducing visitors\, especially cruise ship visitors\, to Cape Ann’s history and culture. CAM’s Fresnel lighthouse lens is her favorite piece in the Museum because it exemplifies how science\, technology and art were combined to address an urgent need in maritime safety.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Bayliss Society at the Cape Ann Museum on September 13 for the closing program of this year’s Jonathan Bayliss Society annual conference\, “Gloucester’s Acropolis: Defining the City Then and Now.” This final session features a series of short talks exploring the role and influence of Cape Ann Museum in the community life of Gloucester throughout its existence\, with a glimpse toward an exciting future as well. \nSpeakers are CAM’s Director Oliver Barker\, Chief Curator Martha Oaks\, and former Museum volunteer Deanie Hancock French. Deanie’s father\, the major American sculptor Walker Hancock\, was involved for many years in the development of what was then called the Cape Ann Historical Association. \nAbout the Conference \nNovelist Jonathan Bayliss (1926–2009) coined the term Acropolis to describe the cluster of civic institutions rising above Gloucester Harbor—City Hall\, Sawyer Free Library\, the Museum\, and neighboring landmarks. This year’s conference brings that idea to life through talks\, walks\, and readings from September 11–13\, exploring how this hillside cultural district has shaped Gloucester from the 19th century to today. \nThe conference is organized by the Jonathan Bayliss Society in collaboration with Cape Ann Museum\, Gloucester Writers Center\, and Sawyer Free Library\, with support from the Gloucester Cultural Council\, Mass Cultural Council\, and the Bruce Cove Foundation. \nMore information is available at www.jonathanbayliss.org/acropolis.

Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century. His paintings from this period capture the local landscape and architecture in a loosely rendered\, light-filled style and are considered by many to be some of his finest works. Also included are sites painted by Josephine Nivison Hopper (1883-1968)\, Hopper’s wife and artist in her own right\, whose work gained recognition long before her future husband’s success. DESCRIPTION:Cape Ann Museum Courtyard\, Downtown Campus\n27 Pleasant St\, Gloucester\, MA\, 01930\n$10 for CAM Members\, $20 for non-members\nRegistration Required \nThis walking tour provides participants with an architectural overview of Gloucester building styles from the mid-18th to the mid-20th century. On this tour of the area immediately surrounding the Cape Ann Museum’s Downtown Campus\, participants will learn about architectural elements and styles that arose out of specific socioeconomic and cultural circumstances during this critical 200-year period in the City’s development. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you loop around downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 19\, 2025\n9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.\nGloucester City Hall\n9 Dale Avenue\, Gloucester\, MA 01930\nFree and Open to the Public. \nJoin the Cape Ann Museum at Gloucester City Hall to celebrate Juneteenth\, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. \n9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Flag raising with comments from city officials and CAM staff outside City Hall. \n9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Community reading of Frederick Douglass’s What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? Following the reading\, educator\, Project Scholar for the Freeman Family Project\, and Gloucester Juneteenth founder Toni Waldron will lead breakout groups for community members to discuss the speech and their experience reading it. Kyrouz Auditorium\, Gloucester City Hall \n10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Interactive program in the City Hall parking lot guided by Toni Waldron on the history of the Freeman family\, a prominent Black family living in Gloucester in the 18th and 19th centuries. A table organized and staffed by the Bookstore of Gloucester and Dogtown Books will distribute books that center diverse voices\, including those written by BIPOC authors\, to visitors thanks to the generosity of Action\, Inc. Plus\, family art activities led by the CAM Teen Council and free scoops of red velvet ice cream provided by Holy Cow Ice Cream!” \nWe hope that you can join us for this community gathering to reflect on important history and the work that still needs to be done. \nFunding for this program has been provided by the Massachusetts Cultural Council through Mass Humanities. The people of the town stood ready to take action against the British\, and many of them did. In this walking tour down Middle Street — one of Gloucester’s oldest streets – we will step back in time to meet people who were witness to Revolution right from this spot; see where they lived and gathered\, in houses still standing today; and hear the stories of the roles they played in defending liberty\, as patriots\, privateers\, preachers and more. This tour was developed in conjunction with the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. \nStroll with a CAM Docent for about 1 1/2 hours as you walk Middle Street in downtown Gloucester. \nWhere to Meet?\nThough the Downtown Campus is currently closed for renovations until the spring of 2026\, the tour will gather at the courtyard attached to the Museum on 27 Pleasant Street. Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions in the first decades of the 20th century.
