DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) is thrilled to announce a month-long fundraiser and special events during the month of September! \nArt of Giving is a month-long fundraiser that includes an online auction (bidding open now until September 20th)\, membership drive\, and a ticketed Art Block Party on September 20th from 4:00-7:00pm. The Block Party will feature The Cookie Monstah food truck\, Metzy’s food truck\, live music\, lawn games\, giveaways\, and more! Tickets to the event can be purchased here: https://givebutter.com/c/art-of-giving (discounted rates for Newburyport Art members!) \nA free\, open to the public reception for the Art of Giving will be held on Friday\, September 5th from 5:00-7:00pm. Light refreshments will be served. This lecture will be held at Newburyport Art\, from 6:30 to 8:00pm. This lecture is free to Museum of Old Newbury and Newburyport Art members and $10 for non-members. SUMMARY:Newburyport Art presents the Art of Giving Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Newburyport Art (NAA) is pleased to announce Art of Giving Fundraiser\, a new spin on the annual art auction – featuring a month-long silent auction and block party! Proceeds from the Art of Giving Fundraiser will directly support the Newburyport Art Association\, a non-profit arts organization that has been providing free public access to the arts for over 75 years. Your support helps to support: 25+ yearly exhibitions\, community outreach & events\, scholarships\, community partnerships\, and educational programming. \nBidding for our silent auction is open online now\, and closes on September 20th at 5:30pm. The silent auction features a Members Exhibit\, with works by Newburyport Art members\, a Collector’s Collection\, with pieces donated by local art collectors\, and silent auction packages that include experiential packages\, such as a luxury portrait session with Mallory Portraits\, and items from local artists and businesses\, such as a handmade charcuterie board package from Milestone 35 Tools & Woodworking\, and selection of 5 new records from Dyno Records. DESCRIPTION:Gelli Plate Printing & Collage with Maria Malatesta\nSaturday\, September 13th\, 9:00am–3:00pm | Upstairs Hartson Gallery\n$55 for NAA members / $75 non-members\nIn this workshop\, learn to make unique monoprints using a gelli plate. There will be demonstrations of various printing techniques which will include painting and drawing on the plate\, using stencils\, layering\, combining shapes and image transfers. Printing and rice papers are great to print on as well as found and old papers. You may then use these printed papers in collage. This will be a fun and productive day of printing and experimenting with different methods and materials.

DESCRIPTION:The Miniature Painter Revealed: Amalia Kussner’s Gilded Age Pursuit of Fame and Fortune \nA Talk by Kathleen Langone — with connections to Newburyport miniaturist Laura Coombs Hills \nFriday\, September 12\, 2025 • 6:30 p.m.Newburyport Art Association\, Newburyport\, MA \nJoin author and historian Kathleen Langone for a richly illustrated lecture on the life and work of Amalia Kussner\, one of the most celebrated miniaturists of the Gilded Age—and discover her surprising connections to Newburyport’s own renowned portrait miniaturist\, Laura Coombs Hills. \nIn the late 19th century\, no female portrait artist matched Amalia Kussner’s prestige or clientele. At a time when photography was ascendant\, Kussner’s hand-painted miniatures delivered warmth\, elegance\, and a soulful presence that cameras could not. Her sitters included Caroline Astor\, Consuelo Vanderbilt\, Mamie Fish\, Minnie Paget\, Edward VII\, Czar Nicholas II and Alexandra\, and Cecil Rhodes—rendered in luxurious detail and often in daringly modern\, off-the-shoulder poses. \nFrom the mid-1890s to the early 1910s\, owning a Kussner miniature signaled status on par with fine jewelry or a Newport mansion. Commanding commissions comparable to leading male artists\, Kussner stands among the “first wave” of prominent women artists—yet her rise also included lawsuits\, scandals\, and sudden turns\, including a surprise marriage to Charles du Pont Coudert. \nDrawing from her book The Miniature Painter Revealed\, Langone presents 70 images\, including color reproductions of Kussner’s rare surviving works\, and explores how the careers of Kussner and Laura Coombs Hills intersected within the elite world of Gilded Age portraiture—offering a local lens for Newburyport audiences.
