Korean writer-illustrator Joowon Oh brings this family story to life through warm watercolor and cut-paper artwork. \nAfter the reading\, be sure to visit PEM’s Korean Art gallery. \nDesigned for children (5 and under) and their caregivers\, PEM Pals aims to engage and excite all of the senses through books\, movement\, music\, art and hands-on activities. Held on the first Friday of the month at 10:30 am. \nAbout our collaborators\nTeresa Inés Coelho \nTeresa Inés Coelho has years of experience as a performing arts educator. She holds a Music Education Degree from the University of Rio de Janeiro\, and is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music. Her passion lies in igniting a love for music in children and their families through music and movement classes using the research-based (and fun!) curriculum Music Together.® \nDillian McGahey \nDillian McGahey is an illustrator and arts educator\, whose own work tackles the complexities of being human through the lens of silly little creatures. He’s been teaching at PEM since 2020\, after completing two internships in the Art & Nature Center. Outside of the museum\, he spends his time helping kids develop their own stories and artwork to turn into original books.

DESCRIPTION:Join artist Elizabeth James-Perry (Aquinnah Wampanoag) for a demonstration of the Native American art practice of weaving a mat from the inner bark of a cedar tree. After the session\, see her nature-based artworks featured in the Knowing Nature exhibition. James-Perry\, a restoration ecologist\, will also discuss how she sustainably harvests and prepares natural materials from the forest\, including plant dyes\, for her artworks. \nAbout our collaborator \nElizabeth James-Perry\nElizabeth James-Perry (Aquinnah Wampanoag) engages with Northeastern Woodlands Native cultural expressions\, primarily in sculptural forms of wampum shell carving\, twined basketry and bead making\, with connections to identity and sovereignty\, maritime traditions and restorative Native gardening.

Animals of the forest have special adaptations to survive. How do they find food and avoid predators? How do some species deal with extreme temperatures and other challenges? Come find out as you meet some forest animals up close and learn more about their wild relatives. \nAbout our collaborator \nJoy Marzolf\nJoy Marzolf has loved animals from the time she was a child growing up in New England and she would always take advantage of any outdoor time to explore nature. Now\, she still loves to explore\, but also to share her knowledge about wildlife\, wildlife photography and nature in general. She has worked with reptiles in the wild\, and in captivity\, for over 20 years. This includes live animal education programs in Oregon and field work with the Crocodile Research Coalition in Belize and the Copperhead Institute in New England. Her company\, Joys of Nature\, provides nature\, nature travel and live animal programs for all ages\, including programs for senior centers\, libraries\, camps and schools. DESCRIPTION:In 2026\, as part of the Salem 400+ initiative\, PEM will present “Salem as Muse\,” a series of talks that highlight works represented in PEM’s collection. These programs will explore a diverse range of subjects that connect to the unique history and character of Salem\, Massachusetts. Join us for the launch of “Salem as Muse” with George Schwartz\, Curator-at-Large\, who will discuss his book Collecting the Globe. \nAs the oldest continually operating and collecting museum in the country\, PEM has seen more than two centuries of evolution and innovation since its founding in 1799. Collecting the Globe offers a window into the early days of the museum: “To escape the ‘prosaic streets’ of Salem\, Massachusetts\, in the first half of the 19th century\, local residents and travelers from across the United States and the globe came to the East India Marine Society Museum (1799–1876). Located on the town’s main thoroughfare\, Essex Street\, the museum transported individuals to another world…” \n“It is unheard of to still have the original archival material\, and the collection\, and the permanent home for an early American institution\,” says Schwartz. “You have to use the term ‘unique\,’ because we are the only one.” A comprehensive history offering fresh perspectives on museums and how they helped shape our national identity\, Collecting the Globe explores collecting\, exhibiting and interpreting a diversity of international objects and art in early America. Schwartz\, co-curator of the new installation in the East India Marine Society’s first permanent home\, East India Marine Hall\, aims to capture the dynamic history of one of the most important American museums during a pivotal time when Salem was a leading port and launching point for global trade. \nExplore the hundreds of fascinating objects on view in East India Marine Hall before or after the talk.

From tropical wetlands to northern wilderness\, Flyway of Life is both a cinematic journey and a powerful reminder of what is at stake in a rapidly changing world. \nFollowing the screening\, join producer and filmmaker Tomas Koeck for an exclusive behind-the-scenes conversation. Koeck will share the extraordinary stories behind the film’s creation\, including remote expeditions\, rare wildlife encounters and the challenges of documenting migration across continents. This intimate talk offers the audience a rare look into the craft of conservation filmmaking and the human stories that unfold behind the camera. \nThe film is 1 hour and 11 minutes long. \nThis event is co-hosted by the Essex County Ornithological Club and made possible by a gift from Tim and Joanie Ingraham in memory of PEM Trustee Emeritus Dorothy (Dotty) Addams Brown. \nAbout our collaborator \nTomas Koeck\nTomas Koeck is an award-winning filmmaker\, Canon USA-backed photographer\, speaker\, presenter and expeditionist. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special screening of the short documentary We Are Made from the Land: Protecting the Seal River Watershed\, shown in conjunction with Knowing Nature: Stories of the Boreal Forest. This moving film highlights the Seal River Watershed Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) Initiative — one of the largest land protection efforts underway in the world\, located in the heart of the boreal forest in Manitoba\, Canada. Hear personal accounts of this powerful place\, firsthand perspectives on the trauma of historic land separation and the healing power of recent collective action to protect Indigenous Dene and Cree Nation land. \nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion with co-producer Stephanie Thorassie (Sayisi Dene First Nation)\, the Executive Director of the Seal River Watershed Alliance; IPCA collaborator Jeff Wells of the National Audubon Society; and field ornithologist Nathan Senner with Mass Audubon\, which is engaged in a 30×30 initiative to preserve 30 percent of Massachusetts land by 2030. \nA reception will follow the talk.

What words would you leave behind for the next generation\, written in the history books like Martin or carved into stone like Edmonia? \nDrop-In Art Making: Collagraphs \n11 am–3 pm | Create Space Studios \nWe invite you to contribute your own words for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Make your own collagraph printmaking plate or find one made by a community member that speaks to you. Their tiny house will also be on display in the Brown Street parking lot for guests to view! \nThis visually rich book tells the story of their custom steampunk caravan\, nestled in the wilds of New England. If you’re lucky enough to take a wrong turn in the mountains of New Hampshire\, you might just stumble upon this 300-square-foot handmade home. A magical blend of fairy tale cottage\, steamer trunk and pirate ship\, it’s built almost entirely from recycled film sets\, thrift store finds\, flea market treasures and junkyard gems. \nOriginally featured on HGTV’s Tiny House\, Big Living\, this unique home garnered international attention in print and online and became a TikTok sensation. The book takes readers on a journey through the couple’s process of building and decorating their home\, which they have completely redesigned in recent years. Much like the house itself\, every inch of this richly ornate book is packed with innovative ideas for small-space living. Discover foldable sections that create individual wings with custom-built wardrobes\, desks\, chairs and a vanity. Explore a bathroom complete with a composting toilet and a folding sink\, and even a guest bed. Other birds sleep in short bouts of several seconds or a few minutes\, then wake up to look around for danger before going back to sleep. Organized and led by members of the trans community\, this vigil will feature trans speakers and the traditional reading of names\, followed by an open mic. \nThis vigil is presented by the North Shore LGBTQ Network in partnership with NAGLY and the Peabody Essex Museum. \nThis event is open to all ages and all gender identities. The only walking tours in Salem that offer entry into historic buildings\, PEM’s tours cover five centuries of happenings and characters from Witch City\, including the infamous trials of 1692. \nSinister Streets: Witch Trials\, Murders and Literary Legends starts by painting the picture of life in 1692 by examining the Gardner-Pingree House. The killing of Joseph White gripped Salem and the country in 1830 with its brawling brothers\, custom-built murder weapons\, conspiring family members and a body that was autopsied three times. Follow PEM’s expert guides into the room where it happened – if you dare! \nThis is an indoor/outdoor tour. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. We’ll see you rain or shine! \nThis tour involves walking around 0.5 miles\, standing on hard surfaces and the use of stairs. Historic structures are not ADA accessible. Strollers may be used on the tours\, but may not be brought into any of the historic structures. Historic houses may include areas of low lighting and uneven surfaces. SUMMARY:Creative Neighbors | Vecinos Creativos: Punto Urban Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist talk with Punto Urban Art Museum’s (PUAM) Creative Neighbors muralists to celebrate their work and strengthen the bridge between local artists and the museum. \nThe Creative Neighbors project brings in local and regional artists to create a series of murals in Salem’s Point neighborhood (El Punto). The theme for this year’s murals\, “Raíces | Roots\,” prompted the selected muralists to reflect on their heritage and the concept of being rooted. In addition to their large-scale murals\, six of the muralists created accompanying canvas works for display at PEM. \nThis project is made possible by PEM’s partnership and is an official part of Punto Urban Art Museum’s Salem 400+ offerings. Canvases by six of the muralists will be on display in PEM’s Main Atrium from November 15–December 2\, with potential remounts in 2026 as part of PEM’s Salem 400+ celebrations.
