SUMMARY:Mbira Music of Zimbabwe: ‘Samaita’ Vitalis Botsa with Erica Azim
DESCRIPTION:Incredible Zimbabwean master musician ‘Samaita’ Vitalis Botsa creates gorgeous\nwaves of sound with his mbira to connect the living with the ancestors. He says\,\n“I’m just the car\, it’s the spirits doing the driving\, making the music.” Botsa is\nvisiting from his village in Zimbabwe to tour playing duets with Erica Azim\,\npresenting a very traditional form of the sacred music played in Zimbabwe for\nover 1\,000 years. \nMbira is a musical instrument with metal keys plucked by two thumbs and one\nforefinger\, creating relaxing yet invigorating polyphony and polyrhythm.\nMusicians play interlocking parts.\, and the tradition includes vast improvisation.\nCentury after century\, the mbira instrument and its repertoire of classic songs\nhave been used in Zimbabwe to heal the sick and call family ancestors and\npowerful tribal guardian spirits to earth to help the living\, in night-long to weeklong\nceremonies. Every time the mbira is played\, it is considered a prayer to\nthe ancestors\, which will result in their protection of the living. \nCommunity ensemble\, Samanyanga Mbira Group will be playing outside the Recital Hall from 6:45 to 7:15 offering an up close look at the art of mbira. \nTickets \n$15 General\n$10 Seniors\nAdmission is free for all students with valid student ID\, under 18 \nThe concert takes place in the Recital Hall\, located on the ground floor of the Classroom Building\, 71 Loring Avenue. \nParking for this concert is available in the campus lot located directly across the street from 71 Loring Avenue.

DESCRIPTION:The University Band presents its end of semester concert under the direction of Cynthia Napierkowski. \nThe program includes familiar favorites like the “Washington Post March” by John Philp Sousa\, a “Phantom of the Opera” medley\, and an arrangement of Charlie Daniels’s “The Devil Goes Down to Georgia”. The ensemble will also perform Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite in F for Military Band.” \nAdmission to this concert is free\, although good will offerings at the door to support scholarships for music majors are welcome.

SUMMARY:Silent Voices Remembered - The Essex Piano Trio

Admission is free for Salem State students\, faculty and staff with university ID. \nEntitled Silent Voices Remembered\, this concert of Holocaust memorial trios will explore the music of five composers dating from the 1940s to the present. DESCRIPTION:Vox One is an award-winning a cappella jazz quintet that combines elements of blues\, funk\, gospel\, and folk into their own brand of vocal music\, which is “most adventurous and distinction.” – San Francisco Examiner. The group\, formed in 1988\, has since developed a unique style considered to be the cutting edge of a cappella. “This jazz quintet puts all kinds of throat sounds to such funky good use that listeners break into applause and – better – feel like dancing.” – Boston Magazine. \nVox One has performed internationally\, and has opened for Ray Charles\, Chicago\, the Persuasions\, the Bobs\, the Woody Herman Orchestra\, the Count Basie Orchestra\, and most recently appeared on Ahmad Jamal’s latest recording After Fajr. The group earns wide acclaim for their performances and CDs. Their awards include “Best A cappella Group\, Jazz” – Boston Magazine. Vox One’s eponymous debut CD was named “Best Album” and awarded “Best Song” by the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America (CASA): “Creative arrangements and soulful spark… fabulous lead vocalists\, and exquisite blend\, a great vocal percussion sound\, and lots of class.” Their second US release “Out There\,” won “Album of the Year\,” “Best Jazz Song\,” and “Best R&B song” by CASA. “…as defining an album for vocal jazz as Singers Unlimited “A Capella” and Take 6’s debut album…it’s that good.” -Primarily A Cappella. With their 1998 album “Chameleon\,” Vox One was named “Artist of the Year\,” and once again it earned “Best Jazz Album” and “Best Jazz Song.” The 2006 release\, Pure Imagination received “Best Folk/World Song” for Kind of a 3. \nJodi Jenkins-Ainsworth (soprano)\, Yumiko Matsuoka (alto)\, Paul Stiller (tenor/vocal drums)\, Paul Pampinella (baritone) and Tom Baskett (bass)\, met at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, where all of them are now on the faculty. Vox One composes and arranges in many styles and settings. A first-time listener of Vox One may be amazed to hear a variety of instruments such as drums\, bass\, horns\, and guitar. “I am beside myself how Vox One produces the sound they do with the human voice.” – Northeast Performer. DESCRIPTION:This is the first of a three part concert series presented this spring in conjunction with Salem State Explorers Lifelong Learning Institute and the Jewish Community Center of the North Shore. \nCarol Wincenc\, flute and Velléda Miragias\, cello perform works by J.S. Bach\, Gabriela Lena Frank\, Robert Sirota\, Yuko Uebayashi\, and Heitor Villa-Lobos in Salem State’s intimate Recital Hall. \nFlutist Carol Wincenc has appeared as a soloist with the London\, Chicago\, Houston\, Detroit\, and Pittsburgh symphonies\, the Netherlands Concertgebouw\, and the Warsaw Philharmonic. She has made appearances with Lincoln Center Great Performers and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. She has toured to Asia\, Europe\, Russia\, South Africa\, and South America. She has commissioned pieces and given premieres of work by Rouse\, Heggie\, Tower\, Foss\, Gorecki\, and Schoenfield. Festivals where she has taught include Aspen\, Aldeburgh\, Budapest Spring\, Marlboro\, Mostly Mozart\, Norfolk\, Santa Fe\, Spoleto\, Sarasota\, and Music@Menlo. \nBoston-based Parisian cellist Velléda Miragias has received critical acclaim from le Confolentais for her “impeccable technical mastery\, [and] strong expression\,” and currently enjoys a diverse career as a freelance solo\, chamber\, and orchestral musician\, educator\, and entrepreneur across the United States\, Europe\, and Asia. \nAdmission to this concert is free.
