SUMMARY:Ruthie Foster
DESCRIPTION:Ruthie Foster’s musical journey is as eclectic and vibrant as her soulful voice. Born into a family steeped in gospel tradition\, Ruthie’s earliest influences were the voices of her mother\, grandmother\, and the gospel singers she grew up listening to — artists like the Gospel Keynotes and the Blind Boys of Alabama. However\, her path to becoming a solo artist wasn’t a straightforward one. Despite a deep love for music\, Ruthie initially shied away from the spotlight\, preferring to play guitar\, piano\, and write songs for others. \nGrowing up in the rich musical tapestry of Gause\, Texas\, Ruthie found herself drawn to the diverse sounds and arrangements of local gospel choirs and musicians. Despite her reluctance to take center stage\, Ruthie’s talent was undeniable\, and her mother encouraged her to step up and sing out. She stood out as a young black girl with a guitar in a choir scene dominated by pianos\, but with her grandmother’s vocal coaching and encouragement from her mother and the church community\, she recognized her own power — as a songwriter\, a musician\, and as a captivating singer. \nAfter studying music at a community college in Waco\, Ruthie decided to take a break from music and enlist in the Navy. The stage drew her once more\, and she was selected to sing for the Navy band Pride\, where she honed her skills as a vocalist and performer. A development deal with Atlantic Records led her to New York City\, where she immersed herself in the songwriting community and learned the craft of writing songs that spoke to the soul. \nHowever\, Ruthie’s journey took a turn when her mother fell ill\, prompting her to step back from music and return to Texas once again. It was a period of introspection\, caregiving\, and deep bonding with her mother\, and upon her return to writing and performing\, it was to shape her voice as a singer-songwriter and storyteller. Drawing on her experiences and her musical roots\, she began to craft blues\, folk\, and gospel-tinged songs that spoke to the universal themes of love\, loss\, and resilience. \nTurning down a major record deal in pursuit of authenticity\, she has stayed true to herself and her vision as an artist\, signing with independent label Blue Corn Music to release Runaway Soul in 2002\, followed by The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster in 2007\, The Truth According to Ruthie Foster in 2009\, Let It Burn in 2012\, Promise of a Brand New Day in 2014\, Joy Comes Back in 2017\, and Healing Time in 2022. She has also released three live albums\, Stages in 2004\, Live At Antone’s in 2011\, and 2020’s Live at the Paramount. \nNow\, with five GRAMMY® nominations to her name\, Ruthie Foster has achieved a long-awaited milestone: her very first GRAMMY® win. Her latest album\, Mileage\, released on the legendary Sun Records\, won Best Contemporary Blues Album at the 2025 GRAMMY Awards® — a triumph not only for Foster\, but also a historic first-ever GRAMMY® win for Sun Records. The recognition underscores the power of Foster’s artistry and the enduring legacy of a label that continues to champion timeless voices. With soulful melodies\, heartfelt lyrics\, and unwavering commitment to her craft\, Foster continues to carve out a path that is uniquely her own — inspiring audiences and fellow musicians alike.

SUMMARY:Samara Joy Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Samara Joy has emerged as one of the most extraordinary voices in contemporary jazz\, achieving a level of acclaim and visibility rarely seen at such a young age. At just 26\, the Bronx-born vocalist has earned five GRAMMY Awards—including Best New Artist—along with an NAACP Image Award\, signaling her arrival as a defining artist of her generation. With a sound rooted deeply in jazz tradition and a presence that resonates across generations\, Joy has become a powerful ambassador for classic American music in the modern era. \nA native of the Bronx\, Samara Joy became entranced by classic R&B as a child and cut her teeth as a singer in her church’s gospel choir. And while her family history is deeply musical—her grandparents helmed the Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes\, and her father\, the musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon\, has produced\, composed and arranged his own astounding original work—she didn’t delve into the jazz tradition until college at SUNY Purchase. During her studies there she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, which introduced her to the larger jazz scene as a rising star to watch. She was heard\, by audiences and critics alike\, as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards and a rightful heiress of the sound\, technique and charisma that defined her jazz heroines—including Vaughan\, Betty Carter\, Abbey Lincoln and Carmen McRae. \nJoy released her self-titled debut on the Whirlwind label in 2021\, followed a year later by Linger Awhile\, her breakout Verve debut\, of which Down Beat said\, “With this beautiful recording\, a silky-voiced star is born.” The album earned her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album in addition to a headline-making win for Best New Artist. A deluxe edition of the album was released\, as well as the EP A Joyful Holiday\, which took home Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance in 2025. Her new Verve album\, Portrait\, which Joy co-produced with the veteran trumpeter/bandleader and multi-Grammy winner Brian Lynch\, showcases the intimate\, soulful chemistry she’s developed with her touring band\, already earning her an NAACP Image Award this year for Best Jazz Album. Portrait also spotlights her burgeoning gifts as a lyricist\, in ingenious arrangements that meld her thoughtful words with music by Charles Mingus\, Sun Ra and her late mentor Barry Harris.

SUMMARY:Painting at the Edge
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis\nTraveling mostly on foot\, by raft or canoe\, English artist Tony Foster paints landscapes in the remotest of areas often risking his life to bring awareness to wilderness destruction and climate change. \nDavid C. Schendel\, Writer/Director/Producer\nJoe Pavlo\, Producer/VFX Artist | Ikuko Kobayashi\, Production Design/Graphics\nFrancisco X. Rivera\, Editor | Moritz Hans Laub\, Composer \nFrom the Filmmaker\nAs a documentarian I am always looking for stories that have multiple levels of meaning. Yank Tanks was a clever way of dissecting the cultural truth behind the Cuban Embargo. The Comedy Club was a not-so-subtle look at the corporatization of standup comedy and its effects on freedom of expression. Enduring Democracy explores economic opportunism and the dangers when\nthat intersects with racism. And Painting at the Edge is a story about an eco-warrior that shows us how to forge a new relationship to nature. On the surface these films might seem as simple as “how do you keep an old car running without spare parts” but one level below there is a bigger question. I met Tony Foster when I was hired to produce a video about the opening of his museum in Palo Alto\, CA. My dad\, Alfred was a master watercolour painter and so when I saw Tony’s paintings\, I immediately recognized the talent in the work. Watercolour is by far the most difficult and unforgiving medium to paint in – believe me I tried! At his museum opening I was standing in front of one of the largest paintings I’ve ever seen of the Grand Canyon. Someone next to me asked what I thought of the painting. I replied “it’s a masterpiece but the colors look very pop art.” “Well\, I used to make pop art!” I turned to see it was Tony Foster himself. From that moment we had a trusting relationship because I had dared to critique the master directly. After several years of discussions about the shape of the film\, Tony and I decided to make the documentary about his life together. As a filmmaker this has been the most challenging adventure I have ever embarked upon. Most film production teams don’t need to worry about where they are going to charge their batteries or how much water is needed for an 8-day canoe trip. Besides the challenge and rigors of filming in the wilderness how do you tell a story about such a singular man? Tony was set on making the film while he was working in the wild\, so we packed the cameras\, tents and sleeping bags and made a film. The planet stands on the edge of an environmental collapse. We must change our relationship to our only home or very soon it could be uninhabitable. Tony is the perfect messenger for those of us looking for a better way and hopefully for those that need the message most.

SUMMARY:Yonder Mountain String Band
DESCRIPTION:GRAMMY-nominated Yonder Mountain String Band set the tone for a new way forward in acoustic music\, carrying bluegrass into rooms and conversations it had never reached before. Nearly three decades later\, that same spirit still guides them\, alive and present on Good As True (2026)\, the band’s 12th studio album\, released March 2026. The record captures Yonder in full stride. It’s unguarded and in motion\, preserving the spark of musicians playing in real time and leaning into everything they have learned along the way. \nGood As True (2026) digs into communication\, the conversations that carry us forward and the ones that fall apart. The things we say\, the things we mean\, and what gets lost in between. \n“Brand New Heartache\,” the album’s lead single\, lives in that fragile moment after a breakup when heartbreak and forward motion exist at the same time. Built on rock-leaning verses and a bluegrass-lifted chorus\, it turns loss into motion and sets the tone for the record. From the indelible guitar riff and self-reckoning at the heart of “Blind” to the sharp\, sarcastic truth of “Long Ride\,” the album stays rooted in real life\, tracing personal and political fractures on “Nothing New” and “The Lie.” “One to One Another” and “Always Almost” linger in the struggle to connect. \n“Barroom Feather” stands on its own. Recorded live in the studio\, the song began with lyrics and drifted into a spontaneous jam that became one of the record’s most expansive moments\, stretching past sixteen minutes. Anchored by a subtle drum track\, it broadens the band’s rhythmic range without losing Yonder’s acoustic core. \nAcross eight original tracks co-written by Adam Aijala (guitar\, vocals)\, Dave Johnston (banjo\, vocals)\, Ben Kaufmann (bass vocals)\, and Nick Piccininni (mandolin\, vocals)\, Good As True (2026) reflects a group writing from inside their own history\, relationships\, and the world around them. Brought to life by the full five-piece lineup\, including fiddle player Coleman Smith\, the album carries the interplay and identity of the band as it exists today. The songs move between drive\, reflection\, humor\, and weight. It is forward-looking and fully alive\, a reminder that Yonder Mountain String Band’s story is still unfolding.

SUMMARY:Tuba Skinny
DESCRIPTION:Tuba Skinny\, the pride of New Orleans’ vibrant and fertile trad jazz scene\, returns to Rockport for two shows! The beloved Crescent City collective started out over a decade ago as show-stopping French Quarter street buskers and have since turned into one of the greatest musical ambassadors of New Orleans\, traveling the world with their spirited takes on Depression-era blues\, spirituals\, ragtime and traditional jazz. \nFor over a decade\, Tuba Skinny has grown steadily in popularity\, releasing twelve albums and touring all over the world. They’ve attracted a wide variety of fans—young and old\, neophytes and niche-enthusiasts—with the strength of their musicianship and the scope of their jazz and American roots music catalog. \nWhile they’ve become known as world-class interpreters of traditional jazz\, over the years they’ve branched out into jug band music\, spirituals\, country blues\, string band music\, ragtime\, and New Orleans R&B. Their approach is a true reflection of Americana\, encompassing the full genealogy of popular American music from an early 20th century perspective. \nDespite a general lack of interest in social media and a limited release of their music online\, they’ve amassed an enthusiastic digital following. \nAfter a decade of playing (mostly) other artist’s songs\, Tuba Skinny decided to fulfill a long-time dream with the release of Magnolia Stroll—their first album of all-original tunes. Featuring compositions from Erika\, Shaye\, Robin\, Barnabus\, Craig\, and Max\, it is their love song to all the musicians\, living and dead\, who have inspired them\, as well as to the neighborhoods of New Orleans that have nurtured them. \nHappens on the following Dates:\nSep 1\, 2026\, 5:00pm to 7:00pm Timezone: Eastern Time (US & Canada)\nSep 1\, 2026\, 8:00pm to 10:00pm Timezone: Eastern Time (US & Canada)

DESCRIPTION:Emerging a decade ago from the underground parties of Brooklyn to touring worldwide and recording a string of albums that’s racked up more than 60 million streams\, the Hot Sardines’ own “potent and assured” (The New York Times)\, “simply phenomenal” (The Times\, London) brand of reinvigorated classic jazz landed them at the center of a whirlwind. \nIn 2024\, cofounders Elizabeth Bougerol (vocals) and Evan Palazzo (piano) debuted \nthe Sardines’ new project at Carnegie Hall\, selling out with in hours. Banned Jazz is a celebration of joy as an act of resistance and the unifying power of music\, recounting how political forces in the U.S. and Europe tried (and failed) to suppress the music of Louis Armstrong\, Josephine Baker\, Benny Goodman and more\, with its messages of cultural\, racial\, and sexual freedom. Frontwoman and powerhouse storyteller Bougerol weaves vivid historical vignettes—of dancehall raids\, black-market recordings\, and Nazi-era laws that made playing (or even hearing) jazz a punishable offense—into an electrifying live-music experience. Her rallying cry “These are times that need live music” has never felt truer. \nThe Sardines’ latest recording is C’est La Vie\, a bilingual affair of vintage jazz standards and originals. The title track\, a Bossa nova original in French\, is a timely ode to fully living each moment\, even when you don’t know what the next will bring. A gospel-inflected “Moon River” came about when Elizabeth and Evan were tapped by director Greg Mottola to contribute music to the Miramax release Confess\, Fletch\, starring Jon Hamm and John Slattery (in which the band also makes an appearance); originals created for the project include the original “Adieu l’amour\,” a foray into the sounds of film noir. And—recorded on the road while she was pregnant with her son—Elizabeth sings “La Vie en Rose” as a spare\, hushed lullaby in duet with Bob Parins. \nThe Hot Sardines continue to tour\, taking Banned Jazz on the road starting in 2025\, which will also see the release of their seventh album.

SUMMARY:Steep Canyon Rangers
DESCRIPTION:GRAMMY-winning Steep Canyon Rangers return to their bluegrass roots with Next Act\, reaffirming the tradition that shaped them while showcasing the seasoned songwriting\, rich harmonies\, and ensemble interplay that have made them leaders in modern American roots music. \nSteep Canyon Rangers arrive at a moment of renewal and reaffirmation with Next Act\, their 15th studio album set to be released May 22\, 2026. The record represents a conscious tightening of focus: a return to the bluegrass foundations that first bound the band together\, approached with the confidence and emotional range earned through years of collective evolution. It is an affirmation that bluegrass still contains endless expressive possibility. Next Act finds the Rangers sounding deeply at home in their own musical language\, drawing strength from tradition while continuing to write new chapters within it. \nFormed in North Carolina and shaped equally by the Appalachian Mountains and the Piedmont\, Steep Canyon Rangers have long occupied a singular space in American roots music. From their earliest recordings\, the band demonstrated an unusual ability to honor traditional bluegrass forms while allowing contemporary songwriting\, literary influence\, and regional storytelling to seep naturally into the music. Over time\, this balance earned them both bluegrass credibility and broader Americana acclaim\, culminating in a Best Bluegrass Album GRAMMY Award for 2013’s Nobody Knows You\, additional nominations for Rare Bird Alert (2012) and North Carolina Songbook (2020)\, and an induction into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. \nIn recent years\, as their audience expanded and their songwriting reach grew wider\, the Rangers began to feel a pull back toward the elemental forces that shaped them: acoustic instruments speaking clearly\, songs built for ensemble interplay\, and stories grounded in lived experience and regional memory. Next Act emerges from that impulse. \nSteep Canyon Rangers is made up of Graham Sharp on banjo and vocals\, Mike Guggino on mandolin/mandola and vocals\, Aaron Burdett on guitar and vocals\, Nicky Sanders on fiddle and vocals\, Mike Ashworth on drums\, dobro\, percussion and vocals\, and Barrett Smith on bass\, guitar\, and vocals.
