SUMMARY:Sea of Life
DESCRIPTION:Sea of Life is a collaborative project among three of the North Shore’s most prominent arts organizations: Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M)\, The Orchestra on the Hill\, and Rockport Music (Shalin Liu Performance Center). Connecting young aspiring visual artists with professional composers\, the project will spur multifaceted community events celebrating the sea. \nCelebrating the Sea through Art & Music \nStudent artists from RAA&M’s Teen Arts Collaborative will learn from composers from The Orchestra on the Hill how visual art and concepts\, such as the sea\, can be parlayed into different musical styles. As students develop the art\, composers will brainstorm with them\, engage them in dialogue\, and write original orchestral compositions stemming from these creative exchanges. \nThe collaboration will culminate with exhibitions of the teens’ art at various local venues\, and a performance of the ensuing compositions at Rockport Music on April 30\, 2025. Audiences will experience a blend of visual art\, musical interpretation\, youthful perspective\, and adult collaboration\, all inspired by the sea.

Acclaimed as a bandleader and celebrated for collaborations with artists like Pat Metheny\, Renée Fleming and Joshua Redman\, Mehldau is admired by both jazz purists and broader music audiences. \nHis innovative approach to melding musical genres has resulted in stunning reinterpretations of songs by The Beatles\, Radiohead\, Paul Simon\, and Nick Drake\, as well as timeless classics by Cole Porter and Gershwin. These sit alongside a significant and ever-evolving catalogue of his original compositions\, performed in both solo and trio settings. \nWith his deep appreciation for popular music and classical influences\, Mehldau has been hailed as “the most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years” (The New York Times). \n“Pianist Brad Mehldau is the ultimate jazz chameleon\, at home covering songs by composers as diverse as Cole Porter\, Thelonious Monk\, Radiohead\, Stone Temple Pilots\, Nick Drake\, George Gershwin and Massive Attack…He respects the sophistication that can be derived from these compositions and treats them all with equal reverence.”\n-Pop Matters \nBelow\, Brad Mehldau discusses his album ‘After Bach II’ and performs ‘Variations on Bach’s Goldberg Theme’ from it. SUMMARY:Project STEP
DESCRIPTION:Experience the extraordinary talent of Project STEP’s young musicians! This nationally acclaimed program is helping to reshape Boston’s classical music environment by reflecting the racial and ethnic diversities of its surrounding communities. Join us for an inspiring performance and be part of their journey toward a more inclusive\, diverse musical future. \n“[Project STEP] is an educational gem…”\n– BSO Violinist Victor Romanul for Strings magazine \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nProject STEP is a national award-winning music program that offers the very best classical music education for young students in Boston and surrounding areas. Not only does Project STEP’s programs harbor a creative and safe learning environment\, they advocate for a future where the classical music profession reflects the racial and ethnic diversities of our surrounding communities. Project STEP amplifies the stories and voices of young musicians of color\, providing space within the greater Boston community for their talent to be recognized. Project STEP students inspire us all to be better and to do more\, and your support is the catalyst for their success. \nWhile many educational programs in New England offer music training for children\, they do not match Project STEP’s comprehensive package of high-quality long-term training\, support services\, and scholarships intended specifically for children from backgrounds underrepresented in classical music. Our students are able to break through socio-economic barriers to become excellent musicians\, creative and confident students\, and successful young adults. Spending up to 12 years in Project STEP\, our students are challenged to achieve and maintain high levels of musicianship. The perseverance\, social and leadership skills\, self-discipline\, confidence\, problem solving skills\, and strong work ethic they develop in the process prove to be invaluable in their future musical and non-musical pursuits. As students in Project STEP\, our students gain deep skills\, as well as learning and career opportunities that make them role models and mentors in their families and communities. \nDID YOU KNOW: \nAfrican American and Black musicians account for only 1.2% of our nation’s orchestras and Latinx musicians make up only 1.6%\, according to the League of American Orchestras (2016).\nProject STEP has been advocating for equity and inclusion in the arts and classical music field for 40 years.\n100 % of Project STEP graduates have gone on to college or conservatory.\nApproximately 60% of Project STEP students go into the music profession. \nTickets: Free\, reservations encouraged.
