SUMMARY:Crys Matthews
DESCRIPTION:Hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie\,” Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-making. Returning to Rockport with her Black History Month program\, she blends Americana\, jazz and blues into a bold\, complex performance steeped in traditional melodies and punctuated by honest\, original lyrics. \n“rising folk music star” -Ann Powers\, NPR\n“Hopeful\, impassioned” – American Songwriter \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nAlready being hailed as “the next Woody Guthrie\,” Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster-child for intersectionality\,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” She is made for these times and\, with the release of her new\, hope-fueled\, love-filled social justice album Changemakers\, Matthews hopes to take her place alongside some of her heroes in the world of social-justice music like Sweet Honey in the Rock and Holly Near. Of Matthews\, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says\, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice\, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times. \n”Matthews began performing in 2010\, but cemented her acclaim at Lincoln Center as the 2017 New Song Music and Performance Competition grand prize winner. That year she also released two new projects—her album of thoughtful songs on love and life called The Imagineers\, and her EP called Battle Hymn for an Army of Lovers\, which tackles social justice themes. Matthews also won the People’s Music Network’s Social Justice Songs contest at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. Loyal fans quickly followed as Matthews racked up performances at large music festivals and prestigious venues across the country including the Sundance Film Festival\, Kerrville Folk Festival\, and locally at venues like The Birchmere\, TheHamilton\, Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center\, and Jammin’ Java. In her TedTalk about difficult conversations called “Sing\, Don’t Shout—An Alternative Approach” Matthews spoke about being born and raised in a small town in southeastern NorthCarolina by an A.M.E.preacher\, and how she witnessed the power of music from an early age. A former drum major and classically-trained clarinetist turned folk singer\, Matthews is using her voice to answer Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to be “a drum major for justice.” \n“I believe in hope\,” Matthews said. “As a social-justice songwriter\, it is my duty to keep breathing that hope and encouragement into the people who listen to my music.” And\, from the title track to the last track\, Changemakers does just that all while tackling some heavy topics like immigration\, the opioid crisis\, Black Lives Matter\, and gun safety to name a few.“ Ani DiFranco said\, “People used to make records as in a record of an event\,” said Matthews\, “so I hope that these songs will serve as a time capsule\, a record of the events of the last four years and what it was like to live through them.” Crys Matthews’s thoughtful\, realistic and emotional songs speak to the voice of our generation and remind us why music indeed soothes the soul. \n“A passionate and powerful blend of infectious Americana melodies and folky instrumentation\, Matthews delivers her honest songwriting through a beautifully raw and unfiltered lens. Oozing soul\, her voice bleeds with emotion and gratitude\, while simple piano melodies and upbeat percussion fill you with appreciation and love for the people around us who fight for change.” — Ear Milk

As a result of her virtuosity\, improvisational prowess and unique jazz and R&B stylings\, Reeves received the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for three consecutive recordings—a Grammy first in any vocal category. She’s touring with Brazilian jazz guitar virtuoso Romero Lubambo. \n“Reeves’ voice ran across the rhythm\, smooth and liquid…Lubambo’s classical guitar solo had a Spanish feel and swung joyfully.”\n– UK Jazz News \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nDIANNE REEVES \nLegendary jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves has recorded and performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. She has also recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim and was a featured soloist with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic. Reeves was the first Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the first vocalist to ever perform at the famed Walt Disney Concert Hall. \nReeves worked with legendary producer Arif Mardin (Norah Jones\, Aretha Franklin) on the Grammy winning A Little Moonlight\, an intimate collection of standards featuring her touring trio. SUMMARY:Soggy Po Boys
DESCRIPTION:Stu Dias\, vocals/guitar | Eric Klaxton- clarinet/soprano sax | Josh Gagnon\, trombone | Nick Mainella\, tenor sax | Mike Effenberger\, piano | Brian Waterhouse\, drums | Scott Kiefner\, bass \nThe Soggy Po Boys spread the good news of New Orleans music across the northeast and beyond\, playing at concert halls and street corners; music festivals and burlesque festivals; bars and libraries; wherever the party requires. \nThe Soggy Po Boys\, native to New England\, have quickly become an institution. They are spreading the good news of New Orleans music across the northeast and beyond\, playing at concert halls and street corners; music festivals and burlesque festivals; bars and libraries; wherever the party requires. Part of the beauty of New Orleans music is that it’s celebrated and appreciated wherever it goes\, from the street to the theater. \nThe Po Boys formed in 2012 to shake the walls of a local club on a Fat Tuesday but have honed their sound and become more than a Mardi Gras centerpiece. Exploring the vast musical traditions of New Orleans and expanding their repertoire to look beyond NOLA jazz\, the band includes traditional Caribbean tunes (it’s been said that New Orleans is the northernmost city in the Caribbean)\, as well as Meters funk\, soul\, and brass band / street beat music. \nThere are a myriad of traditions that flow into New Orleans culture just as there are tributaries that feed the Mississippi\, and the Po Boys are eager to explore what makes the music of New Orleans so damn special. You’ll hear the heavy influence of the New Orleans sound across the band and in the stories told by their original tunes. Despite the scope of its sound\, the outfit is only seven people\, and thrives on the interplay and group dynamics that bring this music to life.

SUMMARY:SEASIDE YULETIDE
DESCRIPTION:Three of the North Shore’s most beloved songwriters and performers converge for A Seaside Yuletide\, a night of rootsy holiday spirit and song featuring Jon Butcher\, Allen Estes and Sal Baglio. \nJON BUTCHER\nCape Ann’s Jon Butcher is one of a select handful of influential recording artists comprising the legendary Boston music scene. Numerous MTV videos and hit songs comprise the underpinnings of a recording and touring career that continues today. A handful of critically acclaimed recordings\, Positively The Blues\, Barefoot Servants\, Electric Factory\, 2 Roads East and 360º mark Jon’s enduring love affair with the very fabric of American music. Butcher’s signature sound and particularly his guitar work represent a skillful mix of Americana — rock\, r&b\, jazz and folk\, all of it focused through a prism built from the blues. \nALLEN ESTES\nSongwriter Allen Estes grew up in a musical family\, the oldest son of professional musicians Estelle and Phil Estes in Gloucester\, MA and began playing at age six. Phil packed the family up in the car and literally took to the open road for musical adventures eventually leading to the forming of the Estes Boys\, Allen’s seminal band. The Estes Boys performed in and around New England and by the mid 80s Allen moved to Nashville\, TN\, writing and working with Tammy Wynette\, Robert Ellis Oral\, Lori Morgan\, and Shania Twain. After 10 years\, Gloucester called him back\, and in the 90s Allen recorded with writer Frank Tedesco. This turned into Allen’s last recording\, the Souls of the Sea album. Souls of the Sea is a collection of songs about the historic seaport and fishing town of Gloucester\, MA and the people who live there. \nSAL BAGLIO\nAs a singer\, guitarist and composer\, Sal Baglio has touched all the bases that have rounded out a successful musical career. But with his recent work as a solo artist\, Baglio embarks upon a new path that looks backward in the most delightful way. Baglio’s music and solo performances dial up a past that is easily imagined in a less-distracted age where music bursts boldly out of a car’s AM radio on a summer drive or floats in the imagination of a young solitary artist learning to strum his first guitar. Free of the demands of the music industry\, Baglio is liberated to recall the past without sentimentality but with a flourish of great stories that underpin his new songs — songs that aim for the gentle heart. Baglio will never be separated from the impulsive spirit of “American Fun\,” the hit he wrote with his legendary Boston band\, The Stompers\, that remains absolutely joyous in its sing-along refrain. Yet\, as he ages — and we with him — Baglio reveals where all that great music began and why.
