SUMMARY:Afternoon Lecture Series: Amelia Earhart – The Boston Years
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, July 10 at 12:00 PM at Wenham Museum for a fascinating lecture exploring a lesser-known chapter of Amelia Earhart’s life. \nMost people know Amelia Earhart as the pioneering aviator who disappeared while attempting to fly around the world. But before that historic journey\, she spent time in Medford\, Marblehead\, and Boston. Why was Amelia on Boston’s T-Wharf at 4:00 AM? Where did she gather around campfires for marshmallow roasts and storytelling? And why did Boston police nearly arrest her for littering? \nThese surprising stories will be brought to life by Dr. Margie Arnold\, a leading Amelia Earhart historian and advocate.\nDr. Arnold is a retired higher education professor and administrator\, author of two textbooks\, and has delivered more than 100 professional presentations. She has spoken at the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum\, the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum\, and the International Women’s Pilot Museum\, and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum. \nDon’t miss this captivating look at the remarkable woman behind the legend! \n📅 Friday\, July 10\n🕛 12:00 PM\n📍 Wenham Museum

SUMMARY:The Underground Railroad in Essex County
DESCRIPTION:Afternoon Enrichment for Adults:\nThe underground railroad in essex county \nIn the 19th century\, a secret network helping those escaping slavery\, known as the Underground Railroad\, ran north along the coast from Boston through Lynn and Marblehead to Salem\, where it split into three trails: One through Danvers\, Andover\, Lawrence\, and across the New Hampshire line; another by way of Danvers\, Georgetown\, and Haverhill. The third route went through Beverly\, where Dr. Ingalls Kittredge tirelessly managed the transportation of fugitives. \nFrom Beverly\, the freedom seekers were transported to the zealous anti-slavery workers in Ipswich\, continuing to Newbury\, Newburyport\, West Newbury\, and Amesbury\, and then escorted into New Hampshire. \nFrom 1831 to 1865\, William Lloyd Garrison published The Liberator\, which was dedicated to the immediate abolition of slavery. A native of Newburyport\, he founded the influential American Anti-Slavery Society in 1833. Men’s and women’s anti-slavery societies formed in many of the towns of the North Shore\, a hotbed of the anti-slavery movement. \nAfternoon Enrichment Series • Included with general museum admission • Ages: Adults • Registration not required \nAbout Gordon Harris:\nGordon Harris grew up in Mississippi and has lived in Massachusetts since graduating from Millsaps College in 1971. In Ipswich\, he is the Town Historian\, the coordinator of the Ipswich Visitor Center\, a member of the Ipswich Historical Society\, and is a former chair of the Ipswich Historical Commission. His websites\, Historic Massachusetts\, are viewed by several hundred thousand visitors to the sites each year.
