Each September, the seaside hamlet of Newburyport comes alive, uniting filmmakers and audiences to celebrate this truly original American form of narrative storytelling. The 20th Anniversary version of the NBPT DOCU FEST (September 20-22, 2024) will feature over 30 films from local, regional, national, and international filmmakers. Since the first recognized documentary over 100 years ago (1922’s Nanook of the North), audiences have enjoyed and learned about multiple perspectives on human life. Documentaries give the world a better understanding of past events and a glimpse of what we might face.
NBPT DOCU FEST was established in 2004 as Massachusetts’ first all-documentary film festival, featuring high-caliber, thought-provoking documentary films from established and emerging filmmakers. Regarded as a “Filmmakers Film Festival,” more than 500 films have been featured over 19 seasons, some of which have received Oscar nominations. Multiple opportunities for audiences include post-screening Q&A with filmmakers, pre-post screening receptions, and a Filmmakers Roundtable as well as ‘First Look” – a presentation of early-stage work of yet-to-be-completed films.
