September 1: Bread & Roses Festival, Lawrence

The annual Bread & Roses Labor Day Festival celebrates Lawrence’s history and diverse cultures through music, theater, dance, and art. The event is meant to recognize, commemorate, inform, and share the labor history and social justice legacy of Lawrence’s 1912 Bread & Roses strike with Lawrence’s present day residents and people worldwide.

September 3: First Wednesdays, Wenham Museum, Wenham

Visit Wenham Museum on the first Wednesday of the month and enjoy extended evening hours from 4 to 6 PM! Bring the whole family and explore our beloved model train gallery, vintage toy collections, and hands-on history exhibits after school or work. It’s a perfect midweek museum adventure!

September 5 – 7: Gloucester Harbor – The Soul of Cape Ann, Gloucester

“Gloucester Harbor – The Soul of Cape Ann” is the focus for a weekend of multidisciplinary talks, readings, and tours exploring Gloucester’s amazing natural harbor and its impact on Cape Ann’s history, commerce, and the arts. Organized by the Jonathan Bayliss Society in partnership with Cape Ann Museum, Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute, Gloucester Writers Center, Maritime Gloucester, Mass Oyster Project, Neptune’s Harvest, Sawyer Free Library, and Schooner Adventure. September 6, 2025 – July 4, 2026-: The American Revolution: A Story of the War in 28 Paintings, Cabot House, Beverly

1776 was more than a turning point; it marked the birth of a new world order. A bold line was drawn as ordinary people made extraordinary decisions, declaring independence from the most powerful empire on earth. Driven by youthful fire, they believed in the promise of liberty more than they feared the cost of pursuing it. Historic Beverly proudly presents The American Revolution: A story of the War in 28 Paintings, a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition of artworks commissioned to illustrate Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Sr.’s landmark book. These paintings are featured in Ken Burns’ upcoming documentary The American Revolution. The exhibit will be on display at the Cabot House from September 6, 2025 to July 4, 2026. Tickets are free and open to the public

September 7: Architectural Walking Tours: Newburyport’s Fashionable Old Houses, Museum of Old Newburyport, Newburyport

Architectural styles, like clothing, come into fashion for functional, aesthetic, economic and social reasons. Over time homeowners renovate, enhance, and adapt to reflect changing times and fashions. Join us for a walking tour of Newburyport’s architectural styles from the 18th and 19th centuries as found along High Street and the neighborhood near the Museum of Old Newbury. Learn to distinguish prevalent styles, note changes that have occurred over time, and determine what questions to ask about historic houses.

September 11: Essex Heritage Friend Event, Museum of Printing, Haverhill

Explore their art galleries and rotating exhibits showcasing one of the world’s largest collections of printing technologies and ephemera. Enjoy light refreshments as Museum President Frank Romano shares his insights into the evolution of the printing industry.

September 12: Fall Fridays on the Farm, Cider Hill Farm, Amesbury

Kick off each fall weekend with free live music from 2:30-5:30 pm. Enjoy the outdoor hard cider bar (non-alcoholic sparkling cider available) and grab some farm snacks in the farm store. September 13: Team Haverhill’s River Ruckus, Haverhill

Team Haverhill’s River Ruckus is an annual festival featuring live music, classic cars, Kids Zone, great local foods, and spectacular fireworks over the Merrimack River.

September 13 – 28: Trails & Sails, Essex County

September 16: RENT, North Shore Music Theatre, Beverly

How do you measure your life in love? Set in New York City’s East Village from 1989 to 1990, RENT is the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical that became a defining pop culture phenomenon. With its powerful themes of strength and connection, RENT is the four-time Tony® Award-winning show featuring iconic songs like “Seasons of Love,” “La Vie Bohème,” “Take Me or Leave Me,” and many more.

September 17: Shein-Levin Duo, Shalin Liu Performance Center, Rockport

Michal Shein and Adam Levin first met at the New England Conservatory during their graduate studies. They have since become leaders in the classical music world: performing innovative programs, growing their respective festivals, and mentoring the next generation of young musicians.

September 19: Dueling Pianos – Late Summer Show, The Cut, Gloucester

Dueling Pianos is back. Bring your friends and have a Ball. Dueling Pianos is a massive “to the top of your lungs” sing along with all your friends! Two grand pianos are center-stage with a team of outrageously talented pianists that seem to know every song ever written.

Each show is different because it’s all request. And you or your friends might get called up onstage for a bit of good humored fun and some unforgettable u-tube moments. These shows are request oriented, interactive sing-a-longs wherein two piano players sit across from each other and trade songs. The dueling piano audience is used for the dueling aspect of the show. Audience members are pitted one-side-against-the-other. Examples of rivalries include country vs. rock, men against women, etc.

September 20: Cape Ann at the Center of the Revolution, Cape Ann Museum Green, Gloucester

Join us on the CAM Green for activities focusing on five key events leading up to the American Revolutionary War through the lens of local history. Activities include creating broadsides, trying out 18th century calligraphy flourishes, making mini-ships to navigate a map of the harbor, learning a Colonial dice game, and more. Learn about the Stamp Act of 1765, the Saville Incidents of 1768 and 1770, the Tea Act of 1773, the Boston Port Bill of 1774, and the pivotal year of 1775, all while discovering how these important historic moments affected Cape Ann residents, and how local citizens rose to the occasion. September 24: Public Sail, Schooner Adventure, Gloucester
