Discover Cape Ann Through Open Studios: Experience Art Where It’s Made
July 23, 2026There’s something special about stepping inside an artist’s studio. You don’t just see the finished work—you experience the creative process, meet the artist, and discover the inspiration behind every piece. It’s one of the most memorable ways to explore Cape Ann, whether you’re visiting Gloucester, Rockport, or planning a North Shore getaway.

The Cape Ann Artisans Open Studios invite visitors inside working studios throughout Cape Ann, offering a behind-the-scenes look at where creativity comes to life. Along the way, you’ll discover scenic back roads, charming neighborhoods, beautiful gardens, and the unique spaces where local artists create.
A Cape Ann Tradition
The Cape Ann Artisans launched the country’s first self-guided Open Studios tour in 1980. What began as a way for local artists to connect with one another and welcome visitors into their studios has become one of Cape Ann’s signature arts experiences.
Today, the organization continues to grow, welcoming new juried artists while honoring the traditions established by its founding members.
Meet the Artists
One of the highlights of the tour is meeting the artists themselves. Every studio offers a different perspective, and many artists are happy to share recommendations for favorite local restaurants, beaches, shops, and hidden gems—making the experience as much about discovering Cape Ann as it is about discovering art.
Visitors also love exploring the incredible variety of work on display, from paintings and photography to ceramics, textiles, mosaics, sea glass jewelry, mixed media, recycled glass art, prints, and more.

Make Art Part of Your Cape Ann Adventure
Some visitors plan their favorite studio stops in advance, while others turn Open Studios into a full day—or even a weekend—of exploring Cape Ann. Pair your visit with fresh seafood, boutique shopping, museums, beaches, or a scenic drive along the coast for an unforgettable North Shore experience.
Whether you’re an art collector, a creative spirit, or simply looking for unique things to do on Cape Ann, Open Studios offers a chance to experience art where it’s made—and perhaps take home a one-of-a-kind piece that will always remind you of your visit.
Ready to plan your visit? The Cape Ann Artisans host Open Studios throughout the year, with many artists also welcoming visitors by appointment. For upcoming tour dates, participating artists, and a studio map, visit www.capeannartisans.com.
