September 23, 2026Glowing pumpkins, stylish scarecrows, and an afternoon with your hands in the soil are waiting across Essex County this month! New England’s famous foliage is underway, and these three events with The Trustees are worth putting on the calendar now.
Halloween on the Hill at Long Hill
Mystical creatures, a haunted pirate ship, and more than 2,000 hand-carved jack-o’-lanterns light a woodland trail through the gardens and the orchard at Long Hill. Tickets are required and frequently sell out, so book before you make the drive over.

Oktoberfest at Appleton Farms
Appleton Farms is one of the oldest continually operating farms in the country, and on the first Saturday of October, it hands the fields over to Oktoberfest. Enjoy a German inspired afternoon filled with craft brews, live music, hayrides, and lawn games on a working dairy farm. Food comes from Serenitee Catering, DownRiver Ice Cream, and the Appleton culinary team’s wood-fired pizza.

Growing Together at Stevens-Coolidge
Growing Together is a new hands-on series at Stevens-Coolidge, run with Arianna Lappini of Birch Arbor Gardens, and the October session is about putting a garden to bed properly. Over two hours, you cover what to cut back and what to leave standing for wildlife through the winter, when to plant, how to protect your soil, and how to turn the season’s debris into mulch. Gardeners of every level are welcome, and it runs rain or shine.
