Must-Visit Ice Cream Parlors North of Boston

October 13, 2022

One of the best ways to learn about a culture and its history is through food, so why not choose ice cream? Massachusetts is a very historically rich state with various ways to indulge in the area’s past. Interestingly enough, there are many ice cream parlors that have withstood the test of time and have preserved history within their walls.

Here are some of the best places to get ice cream in the North of Boston and Greater Merrimack Valley areas that will satisfy your sweet tooth with a sprinkle of history.

Putnam Pantry

Located in Danvers on Route 1, Putnam Pantry is truly a one-of-a-kind location. In 1951, the 10th generation of the Putnam family converted an old shoe factory on their property into a candy kitchen that has since won national recognition as one of the most outstanding candy stores in the country.

Walking into the parlor you are greeted by original exposed brick, wooden fixtures, historical memorabilia, and of course, a mesmerizing array of sweet treats – candy, chocolate, and 30 ice cream flavors.

Putnam Pantry makes almost all of their sweets in-house using old family recipes. They also offer a crazy play on a “kitchen sink” that they call Battle of Bunker Hill Jr. and Battle of Bunker Hill where you get either 8 or 17 scoops of ice cream and unlimited toppings!

Not only is the candy and ice cream delicious, the atmosphere of Putnam Pantry is also incredibly nostalgic. There aren’t many places you can walk into and see old fashion treats that you may remember from your childhood – rainbow swirl lollipops that are bigger than your head, candies with the strawberry wrapping and more fill the store.

Treadwell’s Ice Cream

Treadwell’s Ice Cream is a staple location for Peabody locals as well as those from surrounding towns. Treadwell’s has been around since 1946 when the original owner and creator of the shop, Russ Treadwell returned from World War II and decided to start a neighborhood Ice Cream stand! The popularity of the location has grown exponentially, but the physical shop has kept its historic charm.

In 2000, the Gould family took over the store and continued all Treadwell’s traditions that have been developed over the last 77 years. Tom Gould has taken the neighborhood ice cream shop and made it a vital part of the community. Treadwell’s is often spotted at school events, sports games, and more around Peabody!

They serve signature Treadwells-sized ice cream in 50 different delicious flavors! They also have a variety of toppings, frozen yogurt, sherbert, and more!

Richardson’s Ice Cream

The Richardson family moved to Middleton in 1636 and started a dairy farm. Little did they know, in 1952, the opening of Richardson Dairies would be the start of a generational empire.

The Richardson family had started a business out of their dairy farm long before there was an ice cream shop. With everything going well, Ben and Hazen Richardson decided to try and create “One perfect ice cream”. They did that and more.

The dairy farm has remained on the property, and has become a popular attraction to pair with ice cream. You are free to visit all the farm animals which range from cows and donkeys to chicken and goats. Definitely a unique ice cream trip you don’t want to miss.

Richardson’s Ice Cream offers 50 ice cream flavors for you to choose from along with toppings and other treats. Stay on the lookout for their product when out and about in the North of Boston area because their ice cream is sold in chain grocery stores and at local shops and restaurants!
