Household Independence: Traditional Broom Workshop

Step back into revolutionary-era New England and discover the art of broom making at Historic New England’s Swett-Ilsley House. During the American Revolution, households relied on handmade goods produced by local craftspeople and family labor. Everyday objects such as brooms, candles, tools, and textiles were essential to home life and reflected the growing spirit of self-sufficiency that helped sustain communities during a time of political and economic upheaval. This workshop will introduce participants to the history of broom making and guide them through the process of creating a traditional turkey wing hand broom using natural materials and time-honored techniques. No prior experience necessary.
