North Shore Juneteenth Association, Inc. is committed to celebrating Juneteenth by centering Black American culture and recognizing the interconnected cultures of the African Diaspora. We use education, storytelling, and community programming to confront racism, elevate Black voices, and inspire social change rooted in truth, equity, and cultural pride.
Juneteenth is an American Holiday that commemorates June 19, 1865, the date that enslaved Black people of Galveston, Texas, learned that President Abraham Lincoln had freed enslaved people in rebel states two and a half years earlier. 250,000 Black Americans learned of their freedom on that day! Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom. Juneteenth is a day to focus on the complexity of the Black American experience.
