Discover Spring Beauty in the City of Lynn, MA

April 7, 2024

Being the largest city in Essex County, Lynn, Massachusetts is a thriving urban hub. While you may assume this makes it a non-ideal place to visit in spring, you’d be wrong. This modern, concrete jungle lies hidden pockets of natural beauty and history. Like an oasis in the desert, there are parks and nature trails to be found in Lynn if you know where to look.

A Park Made Beautiful By the Community

Founded by the first Europeans to settle in Lynn, MA in 1629, Goldfish Pond has evolved from a muddy swamp to one of the prettiest locations in the city. This heart-shaped pond is surrounded with colorful flowers thanks to neighborhood volunteers. It’s a must-see in spring when everything is in bloom.

Boardwalks and Mosaic Murals

Lynn Heritage State Park is a beautifully landscaped 4.5 acre Waterfront Park. It’s the perfect place for an afternoon stroll or a spring picnic as you watch boats bob along the waves. There is a long boardwalk that offers sweeping views across Lynn Harbor and Massachusetts Bay, and even the distant Boston Skyline on clear days. There’s also a lively flow of boats to watch from the nearby public marina. At the end of the boardwalk is a colorful nine panel mosaic mural. Made of ceramics and Venetian glass, it depicts Lynn’s history, natural beauty, and coastline.

Scenic Views from An Observation Tower

On the highest point in Lynn on Burrill Hill in Lynn Woods is the Lynn Wood Stone Tower. Originally built as an observation tower in 1936 to watch for fires, it’s now a stunning landmark great for pictures. Not only is it a fantastic place for a hike, but it provides excellent scenic views of the city’s waterfront and Boston’s skyline.

Eat with the Locals

Eating with the locals really makes you feel at home while on vacation. One of the best restaurants for that welcoming feeling is Christopher’s Cafe. Serving breakfast and lunch Wednesdays through Fridays, you’ll be left satisfied with filling and delicious American cuisine. From omelets to salads to signature sandwiches, you’ll leave full and smiling.

War Relics and Memorials

Spring weather in New England is temperamental, so you should always have an indoor activity planned. In Lynn, one of the best indoor attractions is the Grand Army of the Republic Museum. Built in 1885 with funds raised by local Civil War veterans to honor those who fought to save the Union, it’s truly a sight to see. Its crowning glory is the 56ft by 46ft main hall on the third floor which has walls filled with photos of Civil War veterans. The museum also has six other rooms filled with memorabilia from the Revolutionary War through the Korean War, so you can honor soldiers from all eras of US history.

Yes, it might seem at first glance that Lynn isn’t the place to be when spring comes around, but its hidden parks, trails, and local history makes it a stunning best-kept secret. While you’re in town, be sure to check out the Greater Lynn Chamber of Commerce’s event calendar to find seasonal community events that will make your visit extra memorable.
