December 9, 2022

The Town of Andover is an ideal place to check out this winter. Whether you’re traveling with friends and family or going solo, you’ll find fun, culture, and relaxation while you’re in Andover, Massachusetts. Find a deal at one of the local hotels, pack your winter coat and boots, and venture out to experience all the great things the town has to offer.

Cross-Country Skiing & Snowshoeing

When in New England during the winter, prepare for snow. If you’re a fan of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, Andover has some truly stunning, scenic places to go.

Ward Reservation

Ward Reservation is a stunning, sprawling area that consists of 704 acres of hills and trails. You can ski and snowshoe along the trails, pausing along the way to make snowmen, bird watch, and chat with other winter enthusiasts. If you climb Holt Hill you may find the Solstice Stones. This compass-like arrangement of stones is set up to mark the sunset on the longest and shortest days of the year.

Bay Circuit Trail

The Bay Circuit Trail is not only perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, but it’s also a great way to explore the open areas through Andover and beyond. This 230+ mile long trail is full of natural beauty that you can traverse when the ground is covered in snow. Don’t feel you need to explore the whole 230 miles, though – several sections are accessible by the MBTA commuter rail and other forms of public transportation. This means you can go as far as you like, then catch a ride back to Andover.

Not a fan of being outside in the cold? No problem! Andover is thankfully a place where you can stay indoors and not be bored. In fact, there’s quite a bit of culture to discover in town from museums to art galleries.

Andover Historical Society

Love learning about local history? The Andover Historical Society museum and library connects visitors with the rich history of the town. Discover the unique stories of Andover through enlightening and entertaining exhibits, events, and programs. The library is open and guided museum tours are available from 10 am – 4 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays. There is no admission fee, but donations are gladly accepted in its place to keep these excellent programs running.

Addison Gallery of American Art

Art lovers should add a visit to the Addison Gallery of American Art to their itinerary this winter.

Free and open to the public, you’ll see a world-class selection of American art. The gallery has 25,000 pieces spanning the 18th century to the present, ranging in mediums from paintings to sculptures to photography to textiles. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays from 1 pm to 5 pm.

Andover is the kind of town where you can experience beauty both indoors and outdoors, so don’t hesitate to plan a trip here this winter. You’ll get the best of both worlds, along with so much more, the moment you set foot inside the town’s borders.
