Spring Adventures

Running with Wolves

Would you like to see a wolf in real life? At Wolf Hollow you can do just that! Visitors to this wolf sanctuary will get to see gray wolves interacting with their pack mates at close range. Reserve a ticket for a 45-minute public walking tour and be led to the various enclosures where your guide will educate you about the resident wolves. It’s an amazing experience that will leave you feeling a greater appreciation for these endangered predators.

Relaxing Nature Walks

During the early months of spring, a lot of outdoor areas are cheap or free to visit before the tourist season begins. This is the best time to go if you’re someone who enjoys solitude and the serenity of nature.

Ipswich River

Ipswich River is both the town’s namesake and one of its most stunning natural features. Explore 12 miles of interconnecting trails that wander through forests, meadows, and wetlands. Follow the paths to a vernal pool, an observation tower, along boardwalks, up a drumlin, and on top of an esker. You can visit the unique rockery, which was constructed in 1905. Remember to be respectful of the plants and wildlife as you explore, and wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots.

Crane Beach

If you like relaxing, peaceful walks along the beach, come to Crane Beach during the off-season. From November 1 to March 31, non-members can purchase a day pass to visit the beach for $5 on bike or on foot, while it’s $10 for a car. If you have your dog with you, they’re also permitted on the beach during the off-season for an additional $5 per dog.

Paine House & Greenwood Farm

If you want to enjoy both the outdoors and some local heritage, pay a visit to Paine House and Greenwood Farm. The reservation takes its name from Thomas S. Greenwood, who built the property’s 19th-century white farmhouse. When you arrive, you’ll be stunned by the beautiful pastoral views as you wander the 2.5 miles of trails throughout the reservation.

Adding to the view and history of the property is the Paine House. A yellow clapboard, saltbox-shaped building, it’s a remarkable example of First Period (1620-1725) architecture. For six generations the Paine family made their home here, including the foreman of the infamous Salem Witch Trial jury Robert Paine.
